Dear All,
After a successful Sierra build on my trusty old Optiplex 790 I decided to give this carbon beauty a try.
The main reason was that the DVMT value can be set to either 256 or 512 Mb, without BIOS hacking.
And that I have one for work that I actually cannot use for work - so I usually play around with it.

Specs:
Carbon X1 2016
i5 6200U
Intel HD520
8 Gb RAM
128 Gb M.2 SATA SSD
Intel I219-V LAN
Intel DualBand Wifi 8260
Synaptics Touchpad
Conexant SmartAudio
Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible host Controller

Reference guide:
https://github.com/pive/x1carbon2016-osx-elcapitan

Drivers used:
HFSPlus.efi
OsxAptioFixDrv-64.efi

Kexts used in Clover USB EFI:
FakeSMC
VoodooPS2Controller

config.plist:
RehabMan's config_HD520_530_540.plist (as is)

Everything needed was disabled in BIOS.
To actually boot the installer I needed to change the graphics id (to 0x12345678) in Clover options and disable the 32 Mb patch.
The Installer booted, erased the SSD and started installation. It took 1.5 hours, from a USB3 thumbdrive.... I knew something was wrong.
And yes, something was.
There are two issues I encountered:
1 - bless tool error - but then I did a 2nd round
2 - Installer was not able to install OS
With the 2nd error I was stilll able to start the OS load from Clover but the OS does not load, hangs at the very end.
Gave it 8 hours to complete, but of course it did not. To boot the OS I needed to change the graphics id (to 0x12345678) in Clover options and disable the 32 Mb patch - otherwise I was greeted with a KP.
What am I missing?
Thank you!

Just finished Sierra with 99% success on a thinkpad x1c 5th gen and preparing a summary to be shared here.
i met same issue at beginning as you - installer report error when copying Sierra to SSD at "6 seconds left".
To solve it, pls install EmuVariableUefi-64.efi to you USB disk EFI/CLOVER/drivers64UEFI, then you should be able to continue this journey...

Thank you chaihaixin! That was indeed the issue - would have replied earlier if it was not for my "suspension"... tough rules....
Anyway, I ran into another issue with the graphics "card", but sorted that.
All that is left is the sound, Battery and keyboard backlight...
I would love to read your guide though :)

Another thing: are you sure your X1C is 5th gen? I mean my 4th gen has the same CPU + graphics as yours--- 6th Gen Core i5 + HD 520.

i'm pretty sure mine is x1c 5th given lenovo website said this by given type # 20K3. though looks like the only difference with your machine is i have 256G NVMe SSD..
As for the sound , i simply use kext from this guide and it works well so no further investigation, yet.

as for the battery, i post a seeking help here but no response yet. though this machine could be a real working machine, it is NOT perfect yet. after below 2 issues get fixed, i definitely would like to make a full summary to be shared here.

as for key board backlight .. just realize this model has keyboard backlight...test it works flawlessly under Sierra, same behaviour as Windows...don't know why but it works. :)

Thank you again for your input! I will try the sound fix once I am back home from abroad.
On the subject of 4th vs 5th gen X1Cs, here is mine:

(except for the cpu, display and M.2)

Some update.
Sound now works (Voodoo), keyboard backlight actually works OOB.
I think I only need the battery and lcd backlight mods.
I am still trying to figure out how to patch DSDT ... seems it was not enough to read the guide just once.

You will probably find an matching battery patch already in the repo:

And brightness fix is here:
