Have you seen the Combined U310/U410 post?

It has some information about this topic but here I will give you my opinion on the BIOS. Update it to the latest version 65CN99WW. Optionally/Ideally PMPatch it. Then make a backup of it and post your dump on bios-mods asking someone to remove the whitelist. I started a thread over there recently.

I don't recommend flashing anything older than the latest version because I had some issues with an older version and it wasnt fun. However, I am under the impression that there is a version of 65CN13WW that is "generic" (not from someones backup) but I still do not recommend it. It took less than 24 hours for someone to respond to my post on bios mods with a patch for my own bios backup.

FWIW From what ive seen seen only the win8 models came with the 98 and 99 firmwares. That's where the troubles were initially when people were trying to downgrade to win7. I have the win7 u310 model and the latest bios is version 21 for this model

I disagree that it is the latest version of the bios. True, if you go to the U310 or U410 downloads on the Lenovo support site you will see that 65CN21WW is listed as the only option to download under BIOS.

Lenovo posted 65CN99WW in August, however, the link has since disappeared. (Isn't Lenovo support amazing??) I was able to find the links using cached pages from google, I direct linked to them on my other post. The update fixed a bug (that I was experiencing) that I was previously unable to resolve. I could not simply "re-flash" 65CN21WW because their software package kept returning an error that the bios was the same or newer (rollback enabled in bios). You can compare the two readme's for each BIOS if you'd like.

i think 99 fixed a bug in 98. The 98 bios from what I read was only on win8 machines along with the smaller 24gb msata ssd. I had a win7 machine and it came with the 13 and subsequently the 21 was released.

It's your bios you can do what you want :headbang:

I haven't touched my BIOS and everything works :)

The bios patch was to bypass the wifi whitelist.

I cracked open open the case to upgrade to 8gb ram voiding the warranty. So I thought I might as well patch the bios.

I know :)

I'm going to open the case when I need to swap out my battery. At that time I'll do the ram, wifi card, and ssd swap.

I had multiple reps tell me that opening the case does not instantly void the warranty. Although I bet I would be hard pressed to get that in writing. I had a SMART error on the HDD within the first month and instead of sending the machine back to them they to let me replace the hard drive myself, I sent them the old drive and they sent me the new drive, and a free recovery disk set. They accidentally sent two of the disk sets, which is nice to have incase I ever wanted one-key-recovery. I think they sell the disc sets for around 50$

I swapped out my HDD for an SSD and it makes a huge difference in speed. I have a mavericks backup/sandbox/play area on the 32Gb msata ssd and Mavericks/Win7 dualboot on main SSD
