Here are the specs of a machine I am thinking of buying. I have done some research and I think they will work, but I want some advice.

Gigabyte X79 UP4 motherboard
Intel i7 3820 CPU
GIGABYTE GV-N660OC-2GD GeForce GTX 660 2GB
Kingston HyperX 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 Desktop Memory
ADATA Premier Pro SP900 ASP900S3-128GM-C 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive
SAMSUNG DVD Burner 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM SATA Model SH-224BB - OEM

If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know. Also, do you need a DSDT for X79 boards? I noticed that they weren't in the database yet people had X79 builds.

Thanks!

If you aren't going to be using this build for high end video editing/encoding/rendering stuffs, you won't need x79/3820...also, you can put 4 sticks of RAM in a Z77, so why not do a 3770k/Z77 build and put the extra money on a better gpu(GTX 670)?

Do you have any advice on compatibility? Most of what I do is thread and memory intensive(Virtual machines and such) but not really graphics intensive. That is why the X79 platform was appealing, the quad channel ram and the possibility of upgrading to a 3930K at some point.

Thanks

If you are only going to need 16gb of ram, a Z77 will be fine for you, as you can put four sticks of 8gb a piece into the motherboard. Also, the 3770k performs a bit better than the 3820, AND it is overclockable...I'd say only go for an X79 platform if you need > 32gb of ram...otherwise go Z77/3770k. Will you need more than 32gb of RAM?

Look at this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/335737-28-3930k-3770k

3930k runs hotter, and when you would need the performance boost, you can simply overclock the 3770k because it runs cooler.

Thanks, but I know what I want and have used many different systems with different specs and I know what I need. I was really concerned with compatibility. Also, the 3820 is very easy to overclock. Where with the 3770k you change the clock speed and the voltage and are done, the 3820 has a multiplier and a voltage to change. Overclocking really isn't that hard to do if you are within a reasonable range.

Thanks.
