RAID 0 on hackintos

Hi there,

im considering to get back to OS X via Hackintosh.

Is it possible to have a Motherboard driven RAID 0 like
on Windows? I have 4x 3 TB Red drives.

if its not possible: are all RAID Cards (im looking for areca ones)
compatible with OS X?

if both fails: how good are Macs software driven RAID options?

Thanks for the help.

cheers

No; the Intel RAID that's on most motherboards is unsupported in Mac OS X.

Not all RAID cards are supported in Mac OS X, but the following manufacturers do provide drivers for at least some of their SATA RAID product line:

I don't know which ones are best; the only one I have any personal experience with is HighPoint Technologies, and that was over 20 years ago.

A good site that makes it easier to compare the different options is Other World Computing (https://eshop.macsales.com/). They only sell Mac-compatible products, so anything listed there is sure to work.

if both fails: how good are Macs software driven RAID options?

Someone else will have to answer that; I've never tried it. Just a general note in conclusion - I would never, EVER trust important data to RAID 0 - there is by definition no redundancy, so if one drive fails you lose everything! The only advantage you get is read speed. Do yourself a favor and at least do RAID 1 mirroring, RAID 5 would be better. That's just my personal opinion, but it seems like common sense.
