Did you do a BIOS backup and IFR extract to determine that the 0x18c offset is the correct offset for your computer?

I did yes. Followed the guide to the letter.

You should probably see if the variable actually changed anyway (with "setup_var 0x18c").

But if not, then it means your BIOS protects the variables from being written (they are locked). It is not uncommon.
