I too am struggling to update to OS X 10.8.5. Not only on my HP Probook 4530 I3 XU015UT F.40 but on my mac mini as well. Waiting for the OWC firmware update for my Electra SSD on my mini.

I have a perfectly stable 10.8.4 running on my probook. I downloaded/installed the combo update and using installer version 6.1.6 made the following selections. I tried this with 6.1.4 as well.

Here are my selections:

4x30 Support
4x30 probook model
Quiet Fan Patch
Low Resolution Screen
Atheros 9285
i3/i5 Sandy Bridge
Chameleon r2255
Sleep Image Fix

repaired permissions and reboot. Get a Kernel Panic on reboot. Restored to 10.8.4.

Perhaps I am not reading the sticky guide correctly. Should I only select the 4x30 support and the Atheros 9285? I have never needed the AHCI and not select any of the other patches?

I'm right here with you on my probook. I can't even use my unibeast usb
to boot.

There is no need to apply all the DSDT patches, or any of that other stuff. And it won't work unless you're booting with DSDT=Null. Follow the sticky guide as it is written for 10.8.x -> 10.8.5 update. You only need 4x30 support kexts and AR9285 patch.

If it doesn't work, respond with compressed /var/log/install.log.

Boot your install using the Unibeast USB. Use "-f" (ignore caches). Then follow the sticky guide, Updates section, for 10.8.x -> 10.8.5 update for ProBook Installer options.

No change. I have attached my install log.

OK, there is one ProBook Installer run where 10.8.5 is detected, but for that run there are a lot of options selected in the installer:

Is that the "upgrade" run?

It does appear that all the patches were done as expected.

Did you try to repair permissions & rebuild cache after the install? I think it is likely your cache rebuild is failing (due to some other problem). Make sure you monitor the output of kextcache in system.log (use Console.app) during the cache rebuild.

You could also try booting with "-f" if your boot fails. Otherwise, post a photo of your KP.

Hi and thanks for the quick response.

I did run the installer with multiple selections but then I restored back to 10.8.4 and re-ran with only the selections for the Support 4x30 and the Atheros. So, the install log reflects multiple installs. Not sure why.

I did indeed repair permissions and cache and tried -f. I have now restored back to 10.8.4 again. There must be a KEXT that is preventing me from loading. Maybe my initial installed with multiple selections has hosed it up.

I am attaching my screen shot of the kernel panic.

Thanks again.

Your panic is caused by a non-standard kext, not installed by OS X nor the ProBook Installer. It is hard to read, but it might be: com.eltima.eveusb.kext. Perhaps you know what you installed that placed it on your system.

Find it and remove it. Or do a fresh install of 10.8.5.

Thanks, don't recall why I installed this application. But found this out on the web.

The "eveusb.kext" is part of Eltima's USB Network Gate. You installed the app in your Applications folder. When run, the app installs a framework in /Library/Frameworks. That framework has the kext hidden within it: /Library/Frameworks/EveUSB.framework/Versions/A/Support/eveusb.kext

Temporarily remove the framework AND the app to get booting again. I suspect the app will run when you boot, so if you don't remove it, it will run and reinstall the framework.

It appears that Eltima issued another version of the software on 9/12/2013 so maybe it has a fix needed for 10.8.5: http://www.eltima.co...-over-ethernet/

Thanks, That did the trick.....
