How well does AMD RX 460/470/480 work?

• Does it work without iGPU after fully setup?
• Glitch free? (Sleep/wake, Plug-n-Play)
• Future macOS upgrade proof?

Will you generally recommend RX 4xx over NV GTX 9xx? What specific models are recommended?

They do not work without iGPU and the setup is far from "plug'n'play". Once you've done the setup, they seem to work fine, but no one can guarantee the hacks won't break in any upcoming update.

Personal opinion: Unless you need strong OpenCL performance for FCPX, a used GTX 9xx Maxwell card is superior in every aspect.

To add to what Fl0r!an said.

Setup wasn't terrible, but definitely more steps than you'd have using an Nvidia GPU. Also, if you're planning on Dual Booting Windows and macOS it can get annoying switching your HDMI cable back and forth from IGPU to your EGPU.

I'd probably return my RX 480 for this reason but I got a really good deal on it and I like to have a warranty on my GPU.

Short term I'd say Nvidia but in the long term these cards will probably get a lot better support.
