High Sierra only reboots, won't shut down.

I just wanted to +1 this. I'm having the same problem although my specs might be a bit different.

Gigabyte Z270XP-SLI
Intel Core i7 7700k (4.2 GHz)
NVIDIA GTX 1070

I tried updating my apfs.efi as recommended by this thread regarding the recent 10.13.6 upgrade but that didn't fix anything. I've tried a few configurations with Clover Configurator without any luck as well. I've attached my config.plist for anyone's reference who might be able to help.

I was unable to find/get any kernel panic logs (I mainly looked in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and in the Console app) – if there's someone else I should look to find those, let me know!

Just a quick update, had a look at Rehabman's fork of GenericUSBXHCI.kext and found this post: https://github.com/RehabMan/OS-X-Generic-USB3/issues/10

Apparently this kext isn't maintained by anyone anymore. So I think there's the problem. Something changed from 10.11 to 10.13 that broke our kext a little bit.

Another thing I just tried. I tried to create an automator script to unload GenericUSBXHCI.kext just before shutdown, but it caused a kernel panic and restarted. I guess that's what's happening, as soon as the system tries to unload it, it kernel panics.

here's the log if it helps anyone figure this out. I really have no idea why this kext isn't maintained any more. It essentially works for what it was designed for, even in High Sierra. If only it didn't cause this panic!

Thanks! But it still reboots on shutdown. The only difference I noticed was that it boots in verbose now.

Mine does this too... didn't see it as a serious problem.

Mine reboots instead of shutting down if I have my Wacom plugged in USB3 back ports. If its plugged in USB2 its ok.

I am on x79 RIVE with 4930k btw.

Thank you helped figure out which device was causing this, however it still reboots if my device is plugged in a usb2 port.

Hey I just found this thread. I have this problem too: unwanted restart after shutdown when using GenericUSBXHCI.kext. Regarding this post in rehabman's repo the only solution would be to buy a new USB-card as no one maintains this kext anymore? This is sad as the driver works very well under mojave except this anoying issue...

I've actually rolled back to El Capitan now. Although the driver enabled my ports in High Sierra, they were a little unstable. I have a usb audio interface which I use for recording and I was getting weird glitches in the signal. Since rolling back to El Cap the glitches are gone. Not sure if the driver was the issue or some other configuration issue, but at least my hack is stable now. It's a shame because my hardware is easily powerful enough to run Mojave, but this usb port issue makes it not worth the trouble. I guess I could go the PCI USB route.... I think I'll just stay on El Cap until it's completely unsupported, which is probably not too far away considering how Apple like to operate

Yeah and unfortunately it's not just Apple, many software companies in general are phasing out old OS's a bit faster than necessary. It's the reason I went from ML to High Sierra in the first place.

I haven't checked into this issue in quite a while, I'm just here to see if anyone has found out anything new on this. I too suppose I'll eventually just go to a PCI USB since I have an open slot...whenever funds for it can appear at least.

Again: hugs for life if someone can fix this issue with the GenericUSBXHCI.kext looping reboot issue.
