Hey!

I'm building my first Hackintosh! It's also my first PC build so it's all a bit overwhelming, but also quite exciting!

I have already bought most of the major parts, just waiting for the case before I can start the build. Everything is still unopened in their boxes so could change them if there's a good argument for it though...

Plan is to go straight to High Sierra 10.13.2...

Here's what I got:

CPU:
Intel Core i7 8700K 3.7ghz (Coffee Lake)
MOBO:
Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 7, Z370/ATX
GPU:
Asus Radeon RX 580 8gb Dual OC
PSU:
EVGA PowerSupply SuperNova G2 850W
RAM:
Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 2x8gb DDR4 2666mhz
SSD:
Samsung 960 EVO 500gb
Cooling:
Noctua NH-D15
Case:
NZXT H440 New Edition Silent Ultra (black windowless)
Thunderbolt:
I have the Gigabyte GC-Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt 3 AIC on order…
(edit: chose not to pick it up at this point as it was Rev 1.0, and there's supposed to be a Rev 2.0 of the card)

Questions:

Thoughts on the above parts?

I would like to have a reliable Bluetooth, preferable the latest, most stable (4.2?) Suggestions? Maybe a WiFi/Bluetooth combo PCI?

Planning to use Ethernet RJ45 for internet, is WiFi still necessary?

I only have Mac keyboards, will this be a problem setting up BIOS and such or will they work fine? I also have an old wired Apple Mouse, do I need to get a PC keyboard & mouse?

I only have DVI-D monitors, will starting in BIOS work using the DVI port on the RX 580? Or do I need to get a DP -> DVI adapter? (will get UHD monitor, but waiting for money for that).

Will the 850W power supply be enough? Will probably end up with a bunch of drives in it (doing video) and hope to eventually get a second graphics card (or upgrade to Vega).

I went with 2666mhz memory as it seemed to be the "native" speed of the mobo. Is there any reason not to get faster ram? (considering the 3000mhz ram was the same price). I just though the native speed would be more stable etc?

Is there any cables etc I need that usually aren't supplied with the main parts?

Do I need windows? (for firmware updates etc)
I plan to get it eventually for occasional gaming, but would really need to save the money for now if it's not necessary to get things working...

I'm watching this thread. I'm trying to spec out a very similar rig (also my first build). I was thinking about the Gaming 5, Coffee Lake i7, GTX 1050, Corsair RM750x PSU, and Alpine Ridge card for TB connectivity.

Has anyone had any luck with the Alpine Ridge on Z370 mobos?

Gigabyte says that the Alpine Ridge is compatible with the Z370.

Forgot to report: I have the above machine now working in High Sierra 10.13.2 using APFS...

Some little oddities that remain to sort out, like it seems impossible to wake from sleep, the USB Bluetooth adapter I bought doesn’t work with my Apple Magic Mouse, and I can’t live without the swipe scrolling as it turns out ;)
Can’t control the fans so they seem to be going quite fast so the thing is also noisier than I was hoping...

Since the Z370 MBs are basically the same as the 270s, I’d say it a quite safe bet that one can get the GC-Alpine Ridge to work... might be a little while until I find out... as I don’t have an actual Thunderbolt device to try it out with, was planning on getting then Apollo Twin MkII, but now I’m not sure I can swing it, as this build is getting a bit more expensive than planned... Stuff like the Bluetooth and that I realised I need a decent monitor (getting the BenQ PD2700Q) etc, will make me rather broke ;)

Where did you buy the Thunderbolt card from?

They are is Sweden... And has it listed as Apline Ridge ;)
I was there to pick it up today, but it was Rev 1.0, and since there is a Rev. 2.0 I chose not to get it as I didn't wanna buy an old version if there's a newer available (or coming soon).
The one I didn't pick up should show up in stock eventually, I would guess.

I was thinking of the Gigabyte version of the RX 580 as well... As I thought a gigabyte card on a Gigabyte motherboard made sense. Also it was one of the cheaper versions of the card available... Only reason I went for the Asus version, even though it was slightly more expensive, was that 1) guy in the store spoke highly of them, 2) it was in stock.

For memory, I read that 2666mhz was the "native" max speed of the Z370 cards. And also it had 666 in it ;)

But this is the first PC/Hackintosh I've ever built so don't really have a clue what I'm doing!

Where have you seen a Rev. 2.0 of the Alpine Ridge?
