Every time I reboot my 10.9.2 system that uses the 889 driver, i have to go into preferences, then sound, and select "internal speakers" as my output devices. This didnt start happening until 10.9. Its as if no device is selected by default. Its not huge deal as everything works after i do that, but its pretty annoying. Any suggestions?

After upgrading to 10.9.3 and iTunes 11.2, I have a similar issue.

Whenever the system boots, it automatically selects USB audio out (I have the 27" Apple display that uses USB audio). I normally use the optical audio output and now, I have to select it each time the system boots. I've used Multibeast to reload my configuration, but this hasn't resolved the issue.

I would like the OS to maintain the selected audio output configuration between system shutdowns and startups.

Any advice?
