My system will hard freeze randomly.
iTunes will start stuttering like a broken record in half second bursts of the same clip repeating.
The mouse will freeze completely.
I can't Force Quit.
I can't VNC.
I can't SSH.
It's not a Kernel Panic, as nothing is displayed and the screen stays exactly as it was.

At first I thought it was HD3000 graphics related, because it would happen most often when watching Flash videos on Youtube.

Recently, it happened when plugging an iPod into the computer.

Now I'm wondering if it's somehow related to both the onboard audio and video. Is this a DSDT/889 audio/HD3000 issue? Or something else? Is anyone else having these hard freezes?

How about an SSD? Running one of those?

Yes. I switched to SSD when I moved to ML. I also switched from HD 5450 dedicated graphics to HD3000 graphics when moving to ML because the 5450 wouldn't work in ML.

I was having similar freezes on Lion with a HDD using HD3000 that went away with dedicated graphics.

Interesting.

Samsung 830 64gb.

Curious to know more.

Google: "Samsung 830 freeze"

Turns out this was related to using Xtreme Memory Profile 1 in BIOS. I could duplicate the freeze using Rember or Prime 95 in a RAM intensive mode.

Turned off XMP in BIOS and no more freezes.
