So same situation then me, the "low resolution" tag means that OS X will set this physical resolution to the monitor and the monitor does the scaling to its native resolution.
Without this tag OS X will use the native resolution of your monitor and does the scaling (Retina mode).
If I "Option-click" on scaled I see a lot more resolutions without the "low resolution" tag.
As an example:
I have the option:
3200x1688 (Low Resolution).
The monitor is set to 3200x1688 and upscales to 4096x2160. -> Ugly Text, with gray shadows
or
3200x1687
The monitor is set to 4096x2160 and OS X runs in Retina mode. -> great, sharp text
