So right now he's using an iMac 24" Core2Duo system, that can only be updated to Lion. I want something that will be able to be upgraded for generations to come (i.e. Maverick). Anyway, I was thinking of getting the G5 Case and gutting it, but then I was wondering if there was anything smaller, similar to the G4 Cube, so that it can just sit on his desk, then have a 24" Monitor. Any suggestions on a case? I would like it to have an optical drive, and we only need one HDD for him really (he's in his 60's, but prefers Mac).

I just don't want that day to come when he has to update his system for his phone or something, cause he just got the 5S and it works, but that iMac is ready to die, it's slow as hell!

So ya, any suggestions for a small case for a Hackintosh? Something smaller then the BitFenix Prodigy hopefully.

Thanks!

The Fractal Design Node 304 is a small mini-itx desktop case. You'd need to use an external
DVD drive. (Samsung model on Newegg for 25 bucks works great) Has quiet fans, takes an
ATX PSU up to 150mm. Look for a Node 304 on sale for 60 dollars or under as they will be closed out
this year for a newer model. Use a GB H87n-Wifi with one of the core I3's in the buyer's guide
(Haswell) I3-4330 + an ssd boot drive and your Dad has a blazing fast, Mavericks ready CustoMac.

There is a lot of talk about the new BitFenix Phenom Micro-ATX case. http://www.bitfenix.com/global/en/products/chassis/phenom-micro-atx/ Using a mATX motherboard, it opens up the opportunity to use a slightly more expensive motherboard but with more capability over a ITX size motherboard. Unfortunately, you'd have to use an external USB 3 optical drive.

Being a contemporary of your Father, I, too, don't want a huge desktop computer case on my desk top or under my L-shaped desk because I won't have the leg room my 6'5" frame requires. So, I use a Lian Li PC-A05FN whose dimensions 19.29" x 8.27" x 15.00" (D x W x H) and fits on my desktop out of the way w/o overpowering the whole desktop. (See my Son of Zorro build description for some pictures.) However, that model has been replaced by the A05FNB and is 0.16" taller. I highly recommend this case. It will accommodate full size ATX, mATX and ITX motherboards. I recommend that you find a local retailer that has one so you can see it.

Here's another good, smaller case for mATX and ITX motherboards:
