The board should be compatible with any kind of M.2 SSD, SATA or NVMe. However, the speeds of a NVMe SSD may be restricted on this motherboard due to hardware limitations. Is that what you mean by "does it make sense"?
I am using Sandisk Extreme Pro NVMe SSD with 10.13.6 on my Asus Maximus Ranger VII board's M.2 slot. The slot is capped at PCIe2.0 x2 speeds. SSD was on sale in my local shop and has worked out of box with no modifications.
I am currently getting 750 write 770 read with BlackMagic disk test. Still better than SATA III 6Gbps.
I have purchased a M.2 NVMe SSD NGFF TO PCIE 3.0 X16 adapter. I will be attaching the SSD to second PCIe 3.0 x16 port of my motherboard.
The only downside I see, versus Samsung 850 EVO SATA SSD which I have used before, Cover bootloader opens slower. However, booting speed of the OS is similar.
