Gigabyte B550 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + AMD Ryzen 7 3700X + AMD RX 5600 XT

@rj510 @Ploddles

Are you able to run Adobe Photoshop 2020 reliably and repeatably on your Threadripper or Ryzen systems?

Yes, latest Photoshop, and Lightroom, run fine on the Threadripper with the Adobe patches, which must be reapplied on any Photoshop update.

The only issue I have is that Topaz Labs plugins immediately crash the app, not Photoshop though. Nor do the TPL apps work, yet - they load but crash when you open a file.

Big Navi sneak peak!
  • Borderlands 3 at 4K Badass Quality -- 61 FPS avg
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at 4K Ultra Quality -- 88 FPS
  • Gears of War 5 at 4K Ultra Quality -- 73 FPS

I'm not a gamer, so are those results good, bad or average?

These are the only numbers provided by AMD so we can use them loosely as a performance gauge. Below are the results of the same three 4K games on Nvidia's GPUs:

All at 4K
AMD Big Navi RTX 2080 Ti RTX 3080 Comment
Borderlands 3
61 FPS 47 FPS 65 FPS Big Navi 30% faster than 2080 Ti
Call of Duty Modern Warfare
88 FPS 73 FPS 101 FPS Big Navi 20.5% faster than 2080 Ti
Gears of War 5
73 FPS 62 FPS 80 FPS Big Navi 18% faster than 2080 Ti

@NCMacGuy,

On AMD motherboards, weird things can happen to ACPI when both NVMe SSD slots are occupied. Are both slots occupied now on your system?

If so, please run IORegistryExplorer and select File --> Save As..., then post the IOReg file.

P.S. I've added a new OpenCore 0.6.2 ZIP with the configuration needed to use all USB 2.0 ports, the internal M.2 socket for BCM94360NG, and RGB Fusion 2.0 at the expense of sleep/wake.

@CaseySJ

I only have a single NVMe SSD installed on my system.

In fact I removed the NVMe SSD drive, since that was the original configuration when I had the TB3 external SSDs mounting, to test if I could get the TB3 external SSDs to work -- NO LUCK. So that isn't the issue.

I originally had my 2 x 16 GB - 3200 MHz memory in slots A1 and B1 with XMP Profile 1 and BIOS would only run them at 2133 MHz. When I moved them to slots A2 and B2 with XMP Profile 1 BIOS ran them at the desired 3200 MHz.

I recreated this same result as I moved the memory back to A1 and B1 as this was also part of my configuration when the TB3 external drives were working -- no luck getting the TB3 drives to mount.

As another shot in the dark I'm now reloading Catalina on my external USB3 drive to take another step in duplicating my original setup with TB3 disks mounting.

I'll download your new OpenCore 0.6.2 ZIP for my configuration and give it a try.

Thanks.

@NCMacGuy,

Just retested Thunderbolt and found that things are better than I thought!
  • Thunderbolt devices connect and work under these conditions:
    • On a cold boot
    • On shutdown followed by start (without turning off the power supply)
    • On hot plug
    • On wake from sleep
  • The only condition where they don't reconnect is:
    • Boot into macOS and hit Restart from the Apple menu
This system is flashed with modified NVM 33 from Designare Z390.

Just gathering more info.... is Firewire working with Apples TB3-Firewire Adapter?

While I don't have Apple's TB3-to-FW adapter, everything else in my collection has worked:
  • OWC 14 port Thunderbolt 3 dock
  • Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro
  • PowerColor Gaming Station eGPU
Some eGPU screenshots on Ryzen 7 3700X and B550 Vision D:

One connection via HDMI on AMD R9 380X (in PCIe Slot 1), the other connection via DisplayPort on eGPU.

Menu bar icon to safely disconnect eGPU. However, disconnecting the eGPU caused a system hang moments ago.

I still can't PM you for Adobe software. The current version of Adobe Photoshop is 21.2.4.323, release on 2-Oct-2020. Did you use this to test?

I heard Photoshop 2021 will be releassed in 2 weeks.

My tests are with Photoshop 21.2.4 that was downloaded on October 5. Please see the screenshot in this post. So far Photoshop remains unreliable and will lock up the system.

What I've tried:
  • Applied the following two patches:
Bash:
sudo perl -i -pe 's|\x90\x90\x90\x90\x56\xE8\x6A\x00|\x90\x90\x90\x90\x56\xE8\x3A\x00|sg' /Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ 2020/Adobe\ Photoshop\ 2020.app/Contents/PlugIns/Required/Extensions/MMXCore.plugin/Contents/MacOS/MMXCore
sudo perl -i -pe 's|\x90\x90\x90\x90\x56\xE8\x6A\x00|\x90\x90\x90\x90\x56\xE8\x3A\x00|sg' /Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ 2020/Adobe\ Photoshop\ 2020.app/Contents/PlugIns/Required/Extensions/FastCore.plugin/Contents/MacOS/FastCore
Photoshop has launched and run a couple of times without crashing, but (a) it launches less then 10% of the time, and (b) it has never launched a second time in a row.

P.S. I have 2 days remaining in my 7-day Creative Cloud trial so if anyone would like anything specific to be tested, please let me know before Monday!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply @CaseySJ ... below are 2 screenshots...
1. First one is the B550 Vision D using the supplied EFI in Catalina 10.15.7
2. Second screenshot is taken when booted to Windows10 using F12 (not using Opencore)
3. List of PCI devices.
4. Firewire Status.
