Over the years I have had difficulty getting the computer to sleep ‘deeply’, ie all external hard drives shutdown and all LEDs in computer off. Sometimes got to work and some times I couldn’t.

System Preferences/Energy Save/Computer Sleep does not work at all. Display sleep does work.

About 10 days ago I managed to get the computer into ‘deep’ sleep by either pressing F1 key or using terminal command “pmset sleepnow”. When waking it would take about 15 second to wake fully.

Then suddenly F1 etc only shutdown the screens and sent computer into a kind of sleep, that is TimeMachine backups didn’t run but the LEDs remained on. Waking was almost instantaneous.

I thought I hadn't changed anything. I tried various things to get back to this deep sleep state but none worked until I put
Computer sleep - never” in System Preferences/Energy saver.

F1 and pmset sleepnow now sent the computer into a 'deep' sleep with all lights out.

So if I wanted the computer to sleep I told it never to sleep!!!!!!!

There has to be logic there somewhere.

I hope this ‘solution’ helps someone else.
