Comments: I went an purchased this wireless ethernet card after having problems with my onboard LAN. Plugged it into the motherboard, started the computer up and it showed up under networking. Worked natively with no installation needed.
Already Owned

This was my first (and so far only) attempt at building a hackintosh. I already own a MBP, but was interested in a desktop and larger screen to edit photos and videos. I went for a basic budget build, but plan on adding a Graphics card sometime down the line, now that it's up and running.
I was not able to get the GA-Z77-DS3H motherboard's onboard Ethernet working. Found this thread on the forums that stated there is no LAN kext for rev.1.1.
Based on reviews, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler seemed to be the best budget cooler from a price/cooling perspective. I liked anandtech.com as a reference site.
I was debating between the Cooler Master 690 II case and an Antec 300 case that was on clearance at Newegg. I chose this because it had extra fans, more features for an easier build, and an external "X-dock" (sata dock). This is a nice looking case and fans are very quiet. One of the fan cables was a little short, but still reached my motherboard. The tabs that hold the screens for the external drive bays are a little flimsy. So, be careful when removing them.
The Corsair Builder Series CX430 V2 PSU was the recommended power supply, and it was only $25 after mail-in rebate on Newegg! I was also able to get the G.Skill Ripjaws X Series on sale for $69.99.
I haven't owned a desktop for years and needed a cheapo wired keyboard and mouse for the build. At $15, the Logitech Desktop MK120 Mouse and keyboard Combo fit my needs.
Finally, I used WD 500GB HDD that I already owned. I'll probably get a SSD, but didn't want to spend the money until I was able to see if I could get the system up and running.
Summary
- Working except for Ethernet. See note above about change to LAN chipset for rev.1.1. It looks like onboard ethernet no longer has a supporting kext.
- Ordered and planning on installing TP-Link PCI Express Wifi Adapter (TL-WDN4800) which is supposed to work natively.
Some of this information is probably old hat to most, but as someone who hasn't put together a system before, this was new information for me.
- Hardware Build
- This was pretty straight-forward. Read all the guides that came with motherboard etc...
- When connecting case wires to motherboard (e.g. HDD leads, power switch etc) white = negative/neutral. Colored wires are positive.
- Fans have 4 pins on motherboard, case fans only have 3 pins. This is normal. Fourth pin apparently is for PWN fans, reserved?
- Used TonyMac Guide: UniBeast: Install OS X Mountain Lion on Any Supported Intel-based PC
- Creating Bootable USB Drive Using Unibeast
- Got a “Mountain Lion App Missing” error when trying to run UniBeast the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] time.
- Read on Apple Forums that when you install/upgrade to Mountain Lion, the file automatically deletes after the installation.
- Went to App store and downloaded Mountain Lion again, which fixed the problem and was able to run UniBeast.
- Will post MultiBeast screenshot soon.
