Generic Sandy Bridge Laptop is ALMOST there!

Having a lot of fun with SandyBridge!

I'm a seasoned Unix specialist, and built a TMac, Lion based Gigabyte box
without any trouble at all, and I adore it. Thx Tony!!

OK, I decided a laptop would be nice. Bought an Acer Aspire 5750. This is
an i7 SandyBridge product without a second GPU ~ ie is not an Optimus.
My reading of the Chimera blogs meant I thought this would be do-able.

I started with a SL 10.6.3 DvD, and took it up to 10.6.8 with the
help of the one off "Installation Assistant" pkg judiciously applied at
the right moment. No KP at all. On reboot after the 10.6.8 Combi,
whoops, nothing but a blank screen! But *not* a failure, I could see
the OS was exercising the H/Disk. "Simply" a frame buffering/Port
problem then???

Start again. This time, I installed 10.6.3 onto an external USB HD.
Took it up to level 10.6.6 via Combi. Then plonked Chimirea 1.5 onto
it. This worked a treat, aka a bootable, working VGA (1024,768) system.

Now by using my main machine, I applied Xmove onto that (portable)
USB Drive, giving me a Lion Installer. Taking the bundle back
to the laptop. The Chimera 1.5 boot, brought up the disk and gave me
the Lion Installer to work with. Wonderful! I installed Lion directly
onto the main drive. (The installer was using my VGA Screen/Laptop).

Rebooting after the install, Lion blanked the VGA. Oh dear!

I plugged the Laptop into my HDTV, and Wow, there it was
But the USB Hub wasn't working. So no keyboard/mouse. All I could
do was hit the power button (which Lion spotted).

So here's a puzzle.Since I can still bring up the USB based 10.6.6 and
can see the Lion HD content on the main drive, what could I do to
influence it into working??? Unfortunately Multi-beast doesn't like
targeting non-boot drives.

I'm thinking using a TTY shell, I could copy portions of the Kexts onto
the main drive, and get it to work. Would be nice if Multibeast would
do that for me though!! First this has to be the USB

Purpose of this Blog :: Share the experience, and see if I can get a
second punter to experiment likewise!

Well, last night I looked at insanely mac, and read all about EDID

It is an interesting write up. Downloaded some of their links, and got
data out of the laptop. I'll follow this lead for a while and see what
I can do with it.

The Rugby World Cup is about to start, and that will occupy a lot of my
spare time over the next month. But I will let you know how I get on.
