I currently have a system identifier as Mac Pro 3,1 which shows in system profiler as "Mac Pro (Early 2008)"

Thanks so much!

The general rule when you choose your smbios is to start with CPU and the then GPU. If I were you I would try newer specs like mac pro 5.1 or 6.1 , however if your systems runs ok with 3.1 ( speedstep and general stability) I think there will be no gain with that... Also, mac pro 3.1 is the most " versatile" and usually can accept many modifications ( installation of Gpu drivers etc) .

Thanks so much for the information!
I tried Mac Pro 6.1. That didn't go very well. Black screen on boot and other issues.
Also tried Mac Pro 5.1. That one resulted in kernel panics.
So I'm back at 3.1 now and all is running well!

If you choose a system definition of a Mac that has ECC RAM (MacPro4,1/5,1/6,1) you have to delete AppleTyMCEDriver.kext or you will experience a kernel panic at every boot.

In Finder navigate to /System/Library/Extensions/ and move AppleTyMCEDriver.kext to the Trash.
