I have a clean install of El Capitan 10.11.1 with Clover, with the following kexts in CLOVER/kexts/10.11:
- AHCI_3rdParty_SATA.kext
- FakeSMC.kext
- NullCPUPowerManagement.kext
- RealtekRTL8111.kext
- realtekALC.kext

Everything in /S/L/E is vanilla

My USB 3.0 ports (x2) both work and I can see and use my Patriot Rage2 128GB just fine - everything is good.

I bought a Sabrent USB 3.0 Hub (HB-MC3B), I can see it in System Information, but when I plug the USB 3.0 Patriot into the Sabrent USB 3.0 hub, I see nothing.

Any ideas on a solution ?

Here's what is in System Information with the Patriot USB 3.0 in 1 USB 3.0 port, and the Sabrent Hub in the other:

I have a Z68 board with the same USB chip (Etron), and I seem to have the same problem. The USB3 ports seem to work natively (quite surprisingly), but connecting a hub doesn't work.
What is your SMBIOS ?
What are the name of your USB ports in IOregistry ?

Pieroman,

My SMBIOS is iMac12,1 and I have a patched DSDT with an Intel HD3000 patch (to fix identification as HD 2000 and be able to use the native kexts).

I'm starting to think that I have too many USB ports ? I read somewhere there's a limit of 15.

In I/O Registry Explorer, I have the following USB devices (see attachment of IODeviceTree screenshot):

/PCI0/EHC1/HUBN/PRO1/PR12

The limit is 15-per controller, 15-per hub. You are not hitting the limit.

Rehabman, thanks for your confirmation - you are a great resource!

So, with some experimentation, the hub works fine in USB2.0 ports and USB devices are visible/accessible through it.

When I plug the hub into a USB3.0 port, the hub appears but no USB devices will appear when plugged in.

Which USB3 controller is on the board?

Lot's of trouble with unsupported/non-Intel USB3 controllers.

Best to install a supported controller: http://www.tonymacx86.com/el-capitan-desktop-support/174489-usb-3-0-pcie-cards-work-oob-el-cap.html

I have a Orico 4-port external + Internal header based on FL1100 coming for my desktop.

It's the Etron EJ168. I don't believe I have any kext installed specifically for EJ168, maybe I should ?

USB 3.0 devices (flash drive) work when directly plugged in to the USB port, but not when I insert the 3.0 hub and plug the flash drive into the hub.

I do not know if the Etron EJ168 is supported or not...
