I built a USB with Unibeast 8.3.2 (1) (ATI and NVIDIA options not selected), which copied apple's installer (Install macOS High Sierra 13.5.04 downloaded from apple store yesterday).

I pulled out all cards (GEForce GTX 950 and apple bluetooth/wifi) and plug in monitor, keyboard, and mouse directly into MB, checked bios settings.

I get Clover fine. When I try to boot the installer partition I get the Apple logo for a while, then it stops with the NOT symbol.

I've built Customacs before, but I'm stuck.

Booting in verbose mode it pauses for a very long time with the last line "apfs_sysctl_register:760: done registering sysctls."

Then the screen goes all garbled and displays the stop sign. The last garbled line looks like it could be "Still waiting for boot device."

I've tried all my USB ports. I'm now moving on to trying to use a spare SSD as an install volume, perhaps with vanilla clover + kexts that I copy over from a system that properly boots 10.13.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm way over my depth here.

"Still waiting for root device".
When booting from USB means that there is a problem finding a valid System folder to start up from on your USB flash drive.
This is usually because the flash drive is in a USB3 port.
If this is the case move it to a USB2 port, if it is already in a USB2 port move it to another and try again.
Repeat until you have tried all USB ports.
Use a USB2 flash drive.
If it still doesn't work you could try another flash drive.
You might also try enabling Legacy on your USB3 ports in your BIOS settings.
Try connecting your USB flash drive using a USB2 hub.
Ensure that Fast Boot is not enabled in your BIOS settings.
May require USBInjectAll.kext in /EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other/.
May need PMHeart’s patch to remove XHCI USB Port Limit to /Volumes/EFI/EFI/CLOVER/config.plist.

The problem may also occur when your USB controllers are unsupported, if this is the case you should add the appropriate kext to /EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other/ or try GenericUSBXHCI.kext.

P1LGRIM,

Thank YOU Fine Sir!!

All those flippin youtube vids saying 'pick usb3 if you want things to go faster' as luck would have it the top of my head is ALREADY bald .... otherwise I certainly would have been after failing 100x in a row with the stupid 'NO symbol' I was getting with not just 1 but 3 different (USB3 sticks) lol lol lol -

thanks again as soon as I moved the USB3 stick to one of the USB2 ports things went perfectly!
