Building the CustoMac Pro Socket 2011 rig

I have read the great posts from egotrippin Guide: Gigabyte X79-UP4, 3930k, GTX 690, OCZ Vertex and theandrewlucas Guide: Gigabyte x79-UP4, Intel 3930k, Dual GTX 770, Samsung SSD 256GB.


This is the process I used to install OS X and Win 8.1. I got the system to run, but I have the problems listed below. I was think about upgrading to the F7 bios firmware, but the system works on Win 8.1. F7 provides support for Xeon X5 series CPUs while F4 was written to support IVB-E CPUs. F7 probably still supports IVB-E CPUs, I hope. I saw about 6 people with the same MB/CPU/GPU combination post in the last week and we all have the same problems. I hope this can be the central post we can get together and solve this problem.

Problems: No sound, clock runs slow, choppy video playback. Under "About this Mac" -> "More Info" ->"System Report..." shows the Processor Speed at 33.15 GHz or sometimes it will be 18.1 GHz.

The hardware works fine on the Win 8.1 system.

System:

GA-X79-UP4 v1.1 Bios F5
(on Gigabyte's website the current available bios are F4 [2013/09/05] and F7 [2014/03/20])
Intel i7-4930K
EVGA GeForce GTX760
Samsung 840 EVO SSD 256GB (Maverick Boot Disk)
Samsung 840 EVO SSD 256GB (Win 8.1 Boot Disk)
Seagate Barracuda 1 TB HDD SATA (for Windows storage)
Samsung SH-224DB24x STAT Internal DVD Burner
Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 32GB (8GBx4)
Corsair H60 CPU Cooler
Corsair Graphite 600T
Corsair AX 760 Watt power supply


First I created the Win 8.1 following the Guide posted by Going Bald [Guide] Dual Booting Mountain Lion and Windows 8. After I install Win 8.1, I disconnected the Windows HD and the DVD player. I connected the SSD I want to use for Maverick.


Installation:

1. PreBoot Installation:

I followed the UniBeast: Install OS X Mavericks on Any Supported Intel-based PC Guide to create the bootable USB flash drive.

I copied MultiBeast and FileNVRAM.dylib onto the USB. Complete steps 1 & 2 from the UniBeast Guide.

2. USB Boot:

Put the USB flash drive into your computer.
Hold the Delete key on a USB keyboard while the system is booting up to get into the BIOS.

I set the board to the following:
Optimized Defaults
X.M.P Memory Profile to Profile1
VT-d to Diabled
Save and Exit.

Press F12 to select the USB flash drive to boot.

You should seed the Chimera Boot Screen as shown in Step 4, action #4 of the UniBeast Guide.

Now you need to enter the boot flags, you just have to start typing for the "boot: window" to be displayed.

Type the following:

-v npci=0x3000 cpus=1 -f

Press the enter key

3. Install OSX from USB

Now you can continue with Step 4, action #5 of the UniBeast Guide.

After you complete the OS X install, keep the USB flash drive in the computer.

Restart the computer. Press F12 to select the USB flash drive.

4. MultiBeast

You should see the Chimera Boot Screen as shown with Step 5, action #4 of the UniBeast Guide.
Move the arrow key to highlight the Mavericks icon. Now you need to enter the boot flags, you just have to start typing for the "boot: window" to be displayed.

Type the following:

-v npci=0x3000 cpus=1 -f

Press the enter key.

Complete the Mac OS X Mavericks setup.
Copy MultiBeast to your desktop and then launch it.

Select the "Quick Start" icon
Select the "DSDT Free" icon

Select the "Drivers" icon
Select the "Audio" icon
Select the "Realtek ALCxxx" line in the text window
Select the Without DSDT line in the text window
Select the ALC892 line in the text window. HDAEnabler will automatically be selected.

Select the "Disk" icon
Select the 3rd Party SATA line in the text window
Select the TRIM Enabler line in the text window
Select the 10.9.x TRIM Patch line in the text window

Select the "Misc" icon
Select the "ElliottForceLegacyRTC", "EvOreboot", "NullCPUPowerManagement" lines in the text window.
"FakeSMC v6.0.1123" is already selected.
Select the "VoodooTSCSync" line in the text window
Select the "VoodooTSCync 6 Core" line in the text window

Select the "Network" icon
Select the "Intel" line in the text window
Select the AppleIntelE1000e v3.0.4

Select the "Customize" icon
Select the "Boot Options" icon
Select the "Instant Menu" line in the text window
Select the "PCI Root ID Fix" line in the text window
Select the "1080p Display Mode" line in the text window

Select the "System Definitions" icon
Select the "Mac Pro" line in the text window
Select the "Mac Pro 6,1" line in the text window

Select the "Build" icon
Select the "Install" icon

At this point you can save and/or print your configuration. My configuration is below:

After MultiBeast completes the install.

5. Post MultiBeast:

Reboot your computer.

Hold the Delete key on a USB keyboard while the system is booting up to get into the BIOS
Set your Maverick SSD to your primary boot drive.

You should bring up the Chimera Boot Screen.

Now you need to enter the boot flags, you just have to start typing for the "boot: window" to be displayed.

Type the following:

-v npci-0x3000 cpus=1 -f

Press the enter key.

Now you should see a login in screen or the MAC desktop.

Copy FileNVRAM.dylib from the USB Flash Drive to the \Extra\Modules directory.

Open the \Extra\org.chameleon.Boot.plist file and edit it as follows:

Restart your computer.

6. Last Mac reboot:

You should bring up the Chimera Boot Screen.

Now you need to enter the boot flags, you just have to start typing for the "boot: window" to be displayed.

Type the following:

-v -f

Press the enter key.

7. Add Windows:

Shutdown the system.
Connect the Win 8.1 SSD and the DVD burner.
You should see the Chimera Boot Screen with a Maverick icon and a Windows icon.
Use the arrow keys to select your system and press the enter key.

I have the same hardware (well, almost) and same problems with Mavericks:

1. The display is very slow, especially noticeable with animations and such
2. The clock is continually gets slower the longer the system is running
3. Startup and shutdown are very slow

I thought that these must be related to video issues, but not so sure anymore. I have installed the latest nVidia drivers for MacOS + CUDA but no difference. It's registering all CPU cores, Network, and Sound correctly. Apparently this is a somewhat common problem from what I've seen in forums and some YouTube videos, but I don't see anyone actually solving the problem.

Any help is appreciated.

2 things you might try.

Use npci=0x2000 instead of npci=0x3000 for the audio problem.

install VoodooTSCSync.kext for the CPU problem

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried npci=0x2000 and i think the audio works, play back on video is so slow its hard to tell.

When I select Drivers>Misc>VoodooTSCSync>VoodooTSCSync 6 Core, I thought that it would install a custom VoodooTSCSync file in /S/L/E for a 6 core cpu? I checked the /S/L/E directory and a VoodooTSCSync file is there.

Reinstalled Maverick

Used MultiBeast to install only the following kexts.

AppleIntelE1000e.kext
FakeSMC.kext
NullCPUPowerManagement.kext
VoodoTSCync.kext



CPU now reads 4.53 MHz
System is very responsive. Downloaded adobe flash player. Can play video from youtube but only for 11 seconds.

Going to add more kexts, will update latter.

Once I install the DSDT Free, with minimal items selected my system starts running slow again.

Removing the "Extra" directory did not help.

I read on the net that some people are using SSDT for this configuration.

What did you select in your BIOS?

I read on other websites that someone is using customized SSDT too.
