Jasonbond you might want to have a look at this post. It was my ticket to success on the Front Audio Jack. It requires modding both the audio header connections and the AppleHDA.kext for your system. I would simply post my AppleHDA for you, but it would do you no benefit as your sound chip is an ALC887, and mine is an ALC892.

This is not an easy process, but it worked for me. I have audio in either the front or rear ports, whichever I choose. Good Luck...

I looked at your post you said you did not have headphone option in sound preference. I have the headphone option
