This is my first hackintosh so I'm hoping for as smooth an installation as possible. I have built a few PC's before so I am comfortable with the building part but I am nervous about compatability and installing Lion, so please let me know if any of you see any problems with the components I have selected.

How do I get my hands on Lion and how much does it cost? I was going to go with a SSD for Lion to run off of but I think I will wait in hopes the prices will go down soon. With any luck I can pick up a good SSD during Black Friday/Cyber Monday. I will probably also keep an eye out for a good deal on a Graphics card, but for now I'd like to try running the HD3000. Thank you for any input/advice you might have!

Hey Mors Inimicis. I'm going for a similar build to yours (z68-ud3h, i7-2600K and using the onboard graphics).

The onboard graphics are supported in Lion, but not Snow Leopard, so you'll need to upgrade to utilise it. I think you'll have to boot Snow Leopard with GraphicsEnabler = No - there are guides around this site to help.

People generally recommend the Sony Optiarc and Pioneer DVD drives to work OOB with MAC OS. They're cheap as chips, so you might consider switching the ASUS out. There again, I'm a complete noob myself, so you might want to check with others!

Your hardware list seems to be fine.

Do you own a Mac or have access to a Mac or hackintosh (say from your friends)? If not, then you will first have to install Snow Leopard using the retail Snow Leopard DVD (US$29 from the Apple online store) and then buying Lion, downloading Lion from the Mac App Store (US$29.99) and upgrade to Lion using the xMove or UniBeast method. So this will be a total of US$59.

Yes, my wife has a macbook. So, I just have to download Lion and burn it to a disk? Or do I still need to get SL? I can't believe how cheap it is. I guess its because you pay so much for a mac initially they don't have to sell their software for that much.

Follow this guide to install straight to Lion:

If so then you will not need to buy Snow Leopard if your wife's Macbook is already running Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or above. In that case just use your wife's Macbook to buy and download Lion from the Mac App Store (but make sure you do not install it on the Macbook). Then get yourself a 8GB or larger USB stick, run UniBeast on your Macbook and create a bootable Lion USB stick. That USB stick can then be used to boot the install program for Lion on your hackintosh and install Lion directly. Check the UniBeast guide on this site for details.

You can also buy the Lion USB Thumb Drive from Apple (US$69 from the online store) and then run UniBeast on the Macbook to create the bootable Lion stick.
