Hello,

after many years of buying expensive Mac Pros and iMacs I'm going to try my first Hackintosh. Some shopping advice would be much appreciated.

Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P
Seems to work well, but is there an alternative that supports quad-channel RAM?

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K
Cooling: Scythe Mugen 2 Rev.B SCMG-2100

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 1GB Gainward GeForce GTX 560
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 or Gainward GeForce GTX 570

RAM: G.Skill DIMM 32 GB DDR3-1600 / F3-12800CL10Q-32GBZL RipjawsZ / CL10 10-10-30
That's the dualchannel version I'd get with the board above.
Would you recommend faster RAM or a quadchannel option? I can't find information on the performance gain I'd get with 1800/2000s or quadchannel.

HDD: 2x 2TB Seagate - no questions here

SSD: OCZ Vertex4 2,5" 128 GB
For Mac OS, important software and cache/temp files. Good choice?

Optical: LG GH-22LS50
Power: be quiet! E9 580 Watt be quiet! Pure Power CM L8 730W
Screen: LG Electronics Flatron E2711PY

I plan to stick with MAC OS Lion for a while.
Thanks for any feedback / advice!

Forget about AMD, just go for nVidia, it's more compatible with OS X. The rest, it's just fine, except the PSU, choose one a little bigger (700W or some).

Salute.,!

Thanks for the feedback!

In that case I'd go with the Gainward GeForce GTX 560 2048 MB. That will work, right?

Not true,

The reference design 6870 works OOB with GraphicsEnabler=Yes
as well as several other AMD cards.

I would shoot for that card as it is a bit better then the 6850.

If you want better then that then the 570 or 580 would be it but you need to make sure you use nVidia enabler with the steps out lined in tonymacx86's blog http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2012/03/ ... d-5xx.html

Mmmm. I'm still trying to get my Hackintosh working, and i have an HD6870 (HD-687A-ZHFC) and the most popular MB (GA-P67A-UD3-B3).

Reference 6870 is an OOB working card. The vast majority of people have no issues getting this up and running. I am unsure why you would be having issues but lets not hijack this thread in a solution.

Thanks a lot, eelhead!

I'll choose between the 6870 and the 570 then.

Any info on the RAM? I really don't know how important dualchannel/quadchannel or the speed (1600-1800-2000) is.

Stick with the dual channel RAM.

If you are OCing where is the CPU cooler?

thanks, jester!

For cooling I intend to go with the Scythe Mugen 2 Rev.B SCMG-2100.
