and? anyone use a eSATA Express Card? Still looking for one.

I found some info about eSATA and OSX http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/...d_reports.html

I can tell you that the OWC Slim Card http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/EXP34SATA2F1/?APC=XLR8YourMac09 doesn't work. I can mount the drive for a short time but you always eventually get "drive removed without properly ejecting" errors.

Reading that xlr8yourmac link above makes me nervous that some data I've written is corrupt.

That card does (did) work fine in my old 2005 Macbook Pro. I used it for the Time Machine drive.

I'm wondering myself what eSata card will work. I just thought I could get a USB 3.0 card, but the USB 3.0 port on the HP Probook 4530s doesn't work as AFAIK with ANY USB drive, unless there are new kexts for it I don't know about.

I FOUND IT! I risked getting the arrows in my .....

The Sonnet Tempo SATA Pro ExpressCard | 34 WORKS! in an HP Probook 4530s! It has two eSata ports!
<----- See my profile for the Probook model details.

It's a 3Gbs card promising 125MBs. I saw 95MBs writing 400GB from the internal SATA drive, while reading from a USB 2.0 drive peaked at 35MBs.

Caveats: You MUST install the Sonnet driver. Choose the one for Macbook Pros. http://www.sonnettech.com/support/kb/kb.php?cat=375&expand=_a3&action=a1#a1 If you don't install the driver the Mac won't see the disks.

The card has two eSATA ports so it sticks up from where the ExpressCard slot is, enough to cover the HDMI and left rear USB 3.0 port. There's enough of a gap that my tiny Logitech universal USB dongle still fits.

I got this Cable Matters 15 foot right angle HDMI cable from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004D5GXQI/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 and trimmed the right side of the back of the right angle plug with a utility knife to make a divot about 3/8" wide and 1/8" deep to get the card to fit snugly over it. I wouldn't go any deeper because I hit the hint of some metal or wiring.

I would recommend shutting down the Mac entirely while you tinker and plug in eSata cables. ExpressCards in general will pop out if you breathe on them and no matter how hot-swappable they're supposed to be, I wouldn't push it, especially when you have hard drives attached that might get corrupted. Disks are not hot swappable unless you unmount then cleanly. This card seats pretty securely but the card will usually pop out when you press to connect the eSata cables.

My Probook 4530s Hackintosh did the usual where it takes two powerdown reboots to be happy. I got the circle/line icon on the Apple on the first reboot. You might want to boot first with the card with the driver installed and power down and attached the eSata drives and power up. That way the Mac is seeing only one new piece of hardware at a time.

The card goes for $44.95 at OWC. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet Technologies/TSATAIIE342P/
I got mine from jayhawksales on eBay for $40 + $4 shipping. He has only one left as I write this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sonnet-Temp...rt_Expansion_Cards&hash=item416ee5bc33&_uhb=1

Of course, I'd like even more speed. Sonnet has a 6Gbs version, but it goes for $140. This is plenty of speed for my laptop.

I'll post some pictures soon.
