I recently built myself a new Hack. Its based on the Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming mother board. This board doesn't have a SPDIF output so I bought a PCIe Digital Audio card which I've just installed. But when I select Digital out I get no sound either via the optical or the coax outputs. When I open sound output in preferences Digital Out type is shown as Optical digital-out port. So I assume Mojave knows the card is present.

I know my digital inputs work on my speakers so its not them.

Oh & I do have light being transmitted through the optical cable.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers, Nigel

I made a major gaff in the above post. I didn't fit a PCIe Audio Card I fit a D/A Riser card plugged onto the SPDIF output on the motherboard. I must've been having a blonde moment! after all I once was blonde before I was bald :)

Anyway I still have the problem & would welcome any suggestions.

Cheers....

Not clear what you did or did not do.
For ALC892 S/PDIF:
a. Purchase a S/PDIF Optical Out Plate Cable Bracket for Gigabyte and install.
b. See AppleHDA Realtek Audio/Post #1/XI. AppleHDA Realtek Audio/1. Customization/Procedures/
7. Substitute SPDIF-2 Wire Output, custom AppleLC.kext required

Hi toleda

Thank you for your input. I will follow it up soon.

Cheers, Nigel

Hi folks, I have the same problem with S / PDIF Optical Out. A patched version 1.4.1 works with Mojave. But not under Big Sur. Unfortunately I don't know what was done there. Has anyone changed the AppleALC.kext 1.5.4. to make it work under Big Sur? I have Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming, ALC892. If not, I'll try to do it myself, although I have no idea about it.
