Does anyone know the framebuffer name I should use for the Diamond 5850? I always get a flickering screen on startup and then I have to swap the DVI port with the other.

I recently changed out from a ATI 5770 to a Diamond 5850 as the 5770 gave me some weird GUI loading problems. I'm still getting a little bit of that and I'm thinking it's because it cannot recognize the card. It just says "ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series" under System Profiler and the GFX board is recognized as ATI Radeon Cypress PRO Prototype OpenGL Engine in cinebench.

Any thoughts on framebuffer and correct recognition?

Thanks,
Greg

Are you using the ATI Experimental Chameleon?

Is ATY_Init.kext currently residing in /System/Library/Extensions?

Sorry for the lack of information. I am running Chameleon ATI Experimental. In my boot plist I have GraphicsEnabler=Yes and AtiConfig=Uakari, PciRoot=1, among others. It boots fine like this but it still does not fully recognize the card ("5800 series") and I'm experiencing some really strange GUI performance drags such as pulling up the save window in textedit or browsing my drive in a folder with a bunch of files or Chrome holding my current tab while loading others in the background...

What is your DeviceID? IS it in this list? (first 4 characters after the x of each group). If not, add it.

<key>IOPCIMatch</key>
<string>0x68981002 0x68991002 0x68E01002 0x68E11002 0x68D81002 0x68C01002 0x68C11002 0x68D91002 0x68B81002 0x68B01002 0x68B11002 0x68A01002 0x68A11002 </string>

It is there...

Getting stumped. Have you tried the Zonalis framebuffer - that's the one that worked in my Diamond HD 5870.

Did you make sure there's no ATY-Init.kext lurking around in your /S/L/E

Zonalis doesn't work but strangely if I input AtiConfig=Uakari as a boot command it doesn't have the white noise flicker issue as far as I can tell. Does the order of the boot plist matter?

As far as I can tell no, the order doesn't matter.

Does anyone know why this card is not being properly identified?

I am going to return the card as there are some performance issues but here are my findings:

1. Installing netkas's ATY_Init.kext into /Extra/Extensions and setting GraphicsEnabler=No allowed OSX to correctly recognize the card as a 5850 as opposed to a 5800 family. Not sure if that helped anything but ->
2. So far, much more stable in terms of GUI - no random pinwheels thus far. So maybe it did do something. It appears to only recognize the 2 DVI ports but that doesn't matter much to me as I am still going to return it and go back to a 5770 which seems to perform a bit better and doesn't require a GraphicsEnabler=No.
