Here's an error report I got when booting and this is from the boot attempt before where the "reboot loop" thing occured. Maybe this is something that helps for debugging.

The reboot is caused by this panic. Have you tried plugging in all 3 display port cables into the Nvidia card? Boot with the monitor set to mini display port, then switch two dual display port when Mac OS X has finished booting.

no that's something I haven't tried but this wouldn't be any easier than just switching the monitor off during boot. Maybe I'm not getting your right but what should be the outcome of that?
I believe the hardware will not attempt 5K unless the monitor is set to use dual DisplayPort so it shouldn't cause a panic if they're plugged in but the monitor is set to MiniDisplayPort. So you can boot with 4K with the Mini DisplayPort setting, then switch to 5K using the Dual DisplayPort setting without having to turn the monitor off so you know when it's done booting.

sure, I got that, but isn't switching input ports even more complicated than just switching off the monitor? I mean it's not that bad currently with switching the monitor off, but switching input ports does't bring a real advantage. Booting normally takes just a few secs and I can leave the monitor on until the clover menu and everything that happens afterwards is hidden behind the white apple anyways.

But thanks for the tipp and I think you are right - it will most likely boot with the mini dp cable as it does with only one dp cable attached. The 5k switch really seems to be the problem. Probably fixed with a new nvidia driver...!? who knows.

@grootbatavia just did a quick Google search and think your card does not support 5k but only 4K.

Hi Helmi,

Could you get me a link to that? According to my own research the gpu should have no trouble powering a 5K monitor. It is the 4gb version so it would theoretically even work for games, which i won't require as I only use my monitor for editing pictures in lightroom and dxo. If it really won't support 5K I would have to switch cards, but with triple dp1.2 outs and sufficient memory, I see no real issue other than what appear to be compatibility.

Thanks in advance.

Sure, but this is just the official website (this is the german website but the specifications are written in english): http://www.gigabyte.de/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5400#sp

There it says:

Digital max resolution 4096 X 2160
Analog max resolution 2048 x 1536

Good evening Helmi,

I'm quite sure @slim.jim is right. No card will run the 5K monitor on a single cable. It requires dual display cables (1.2) to run 5K. The GTX 960 G1 4GB I use should have no trouble with that. That said, I currently run it on a single DP to miniDP cable until such time that I can successfully get 5K of a dual DP 1.2 cable connection.

Happy to consider buying another card if it really can't work on mine, but I see no evidence that it shouldn't be possible.

Cheers.

From fudzilla: http://www.fudzilla.com/reviews/36800-gigabyte-gtx-960-g1-gaming-previewed

"Like GeForce GTX 980, the GeForce GTX 960 has a new display engine capable of supporting resolutions up to 5K with up to four simultaneous displays (including support for up to four 4K MST displays). GeForce GTX 960 also supports HDMI 2.0."

And this is the 2gb version, which can run up to 4 4K MST's on the fly, which should make 5K for photo editing a breeze... In addition to this, the 4gb one I run was released later and has significantly upgraded components... I'll keep trying to get it to work for now. I love how quiet this card is, even if pushed hard.

@Helmi74
The issue with monitor off / on is gone with the update to 10.11.6 and the recent Nvidia web drivers :) At least for me!
My system now boots normally and everything is finally working how it's supposed to be!

What I did:
1. Download recent nvidia drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/105646/en-us
2. Download recent agdpfix 1.3 http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/b...-imac-15-or-imac-17-system-definition.183113/
3. Update to 10.11.6 via Mac Store
4. Let the update run
5. First boot after update, graphics will be sluggish because there's no nvidia driver yet
6. Install nvidia driver
7. Apply agdpfix and restart
8. Enjoy your system with fully working 5k resolution :)

I hope it works for you too?
