I still have big problems with the system. Many times, all applications quit unexpectedly. I have no error messages. If I try to reopen it, the application quit again and again. I must reboot the computer.

It's quite disturbing.

Another problem is that sometimes the system doesn't wake up (in deep sleep mode). The power supply and fans are on but the system does not wake up. Yet, other times, the computer wake up normally.

Yesterday, I repaired the permission and repaired the boot volume (it was damaged....).

This morning I run a memtest that raised immediate errors. After that I run successfully a memtest for 3 hours...

I checked the ram settings and they were incorrect: the voltage was too low for my ram - OCZ OCZ3G1600LV6GK -. I put the correct CAS and voltage settings and I run another memtest. I will have results in 4 hours.

I will do a cold boot tomerow, this may be the cause - motherboard bug with ram on cold boot ? - (or the cause was the incorrect memory settings).

30 minutes of Prime95 test does not raised errors.

Thx!

Hi,

Right - so I had the same issue with OCZ Gold Series RAM - I bought the 6GB 2000Mhz versions - see my signature - and I would get cold boot issues into OSX. I would find that OSX would crash half way through each load in a cold boot and I'd have to restart my machine - then it would work.

The only problem is that OSX is quite a sensitive operating system with Permissions and the like and after a number of times of half booting into OSX - eventually I couldn't repair my Snow Leopard install disk and I had to reformat it. I would suggest you creating backups of your Snow Leopard boot drive right now or maybe creating a new partition and moving everything onto the second half of the drive - so that you can just reformat the 1st half with SL boot in it if it breaks.

So I went through a lot of testing and BIOS settings following input from the OCZ Forum, TweakTown Forum and Gigabyte forum - I'd suggest doing a bit of reading on each of their forums.

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/
http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/board,5.0.html

Here's the thread I made on OCZ
http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum ... .php?79208

For my OCZ Gold Series - I was recommended to have DRAM at 1.66v (can't do 1.65 in BIOS and at 1.66 then I get actual readings of 1.648 on the RAM hence it is as close as you can get to 1.65v) and have QPI/VTT to 1.355 (again can't do 1.35 in BIOS).

Try these settings but I think you may be in the same boat that I was - I couldn't get anything to work with my RAM so I bought some new sticks from Corsair (see my signature) and these worked brilliantly out of the box and have stood up to my overclocking settings in my BIOS and are fully stable on cold boot.

Note that my old RAM would work fine on a warm-boot - It passed Memtest for 10 hours and 18 hours of Prime95 - ONCE ON A WARM BOOT ! So I'd suggest that you do your testing from a cold boot.

I picked these chips as they are on the supported list for the board from Gigabyte and also guaranteed by Corsair to work with the system - note the exact model number though! They also have XMP Profiling which makes setting them up a lot quicker!

You might want to consider RMA-ing the RAM sticks but I feel that it's actually a compatibility issue with the board - they are currently only on BIOS FB (version FC5 is on TweakTown forum but this won't work with OSX until someone makes a DSDT for you for shut down etc).

Please let me know how you get on, I know how it feels. After 3-4 weeks of testing and trying different things, I bit the bullet and bought new RAM and am selling my old sticks. I couldn't wait for the new BIOS revisions and it was taking up too much of my time. Plus it ruined my OSX install beyond repair - that's when I knew I had to replace them.

Please let me know how you get on.

The alternative is to boot into Windows or Linux or something for a while on each cold boot then reset and go into Osx or keep your machine in sleep mode. I'm sure that a new BIOS version will come out at some point and fix this but it depends on if you can wait.

P.S. I'd change the name of the subject to maybe include "cold boot" so people can find it.

How are you getting on?

Re: CustoMac 2010 -Application quits unexpectedly

I just try the cold boot. The OCZ Ram bug on cold boot is reproduced. So, I will buy the corsair one.

Do you think that cold boot ram bug is corrected on gigabyte firmware FC ?

Hmmmmm - can you please post up all of your BIOS settings using the following template?

Reading the release notes on FC - it doesn't say that it fixes any RAM issues - but worth a try - only problem is to get OSX working properly I'd wait for MacMan to make a DSDT for the FC BIOS.

I'd hold out on the RAM just yet - let me look at your settings.

Try setting QPI = x36 , Uncore freq to x20 or x21 (double the multiplier of your RAM), DRAM voltage to 1.66 (don't worry it's pink), QPI/VTT to 1.3 or 1.355.

In your RAM settings try setting the command rate to 2 and tRFC = 88.

Check those settings work on a warm boot using the latest Memtest86+ (download the ISO and burn to a CD - then high F12 at boot to select boot from CD).

Then try again with a cold boot and see if that's any better.

P.S. I'm getting some of these settings from the OCZ forum where I posted issues with my RAM

Re: CustoMac 2010 -Application quits unexpectedly

This is better on cold boot with a qpi of 1,3 and dram voltage of 1,64 (trfc= 88, cmd rate= 2). But I still have errors (more less than yesterday - 1 error on the first minute compared to 88 errors -). On warm boot the computer seems to be more reactive.

I will try to increase the qpi voltage to eliminate these errors.

Does someone have a stable computer with this ram model ?

I still have ram errors on cold boot.

I think I will buy your working ram sticks.

Worth having a good look around Tweak Town and Gigabyte forum for people's experiences with different ram chips.

My works worked very well and are fine during my overclock but it might be a batch thing.
