UPDATE 9 months later :
{Disabling USB3 controller in the bios seemed to have fixed the problem, but after 2 days of test the problem is coming back. I guess i am using too much fancy usb stuff for the computer like a USB audio interface, USB license manager thingie, USB wifi stick, sometimes a gamepad and an external harddrive)

Hi Folks!

I finished the build about a month ago.
Works like a charm! It's fantastic.

I do experience random crash on start-up, the apple green screen crashes and I am prompted to reboot.

It seems USB-related. When I unplugged or plugged a new device between 2 start-ups, I experienced more crashes.

This morning I had my bluetooth and wireless usb sticks connected on the front ports.
It crashed on start-up. I usually have to reboot once and it starts OSX normally. But this time it wouldn't, I tried re-booted 3 times and it was still crashing. I then disconnected the 2 usb sticks and OSX finally booted normally.

I read on other posts that it could be ram related ? I got 12 gb of Kingston HyperX.

Any leads on a solution of reasons would be appreciated!

Greetings,

Nicolas.

Re: Grey Screen Crash on Startup X58A-UD3R/i7 950

Did you upgrade your system to 10.6.6?
My system was very stable and never crash on boot.
However, after upgrade to 10.6.6, I got the same problem with you.
I can see the CPU panic by type -v flags when booting up the system.

I think it's the problem of c-state, so I change the option of boot.
(1) DropSSDT=Yes
(2) GenerateCStates=Yes
(3) GeneratePStates=Yes

My system became more stable at boot.

Re: Grey Screen Crash on Startup X58A-UD3R/i7 950

I have been having the same thing happen on my machine from time to time since updating to 10.6.6

USB devices don't seem to provoke the crashes for me.

I'm not sure I understand ishige's post: are those three things supposed to be added to a .plist somewhere in S/L/E or extras?

Has this been discussed on here already? I can't seem to find any topics in the search...

Re: Grey Screen Crash on Startup X58A-UD3R/i7 950

Waffle Head:

I add these code in com.apple.boot.plist in /extra
However, sometimes I still got kernel panic on boot.
I don't know is this the root cause or not.
I have compare the loaded drivers between 10.6.5 and 10.6.6
There are nothing change on USB drivers.
They only change the ATI drivers and IOAudioFamily.kext

When I boot with the backup HD with 10.6.5, never got kernel panic.
So, I guess it's the problem related to the kernel or CPU control of 10.6.6

Hope someone can find out the solution.

Re: Grey Screen Crash on Startup X58A-UD3R/i7 950

After reading around a bit, I think this could be related to bios settings. Apparently If you leave certain settings on auto, random crashes can occur.

I have manually set most things, but I think in my case my Vcore might be a bit low (1.16) as even at stock frequency the i7 950 seems to be quite power hungry. The only other occasions when I've experienced this kind of crash at boot was when I was looking for the lowest stable Vcore, and thinking back I was doing this at around the same time that I updated to 10.6.6

So it might be worth trying different bios settings and making sure not to leave everything on auto.

Re: Grey Screen Crash on Startup X58A-UD3R/i7 950

I don't think it's the problem of BIOS setting by auto.
I use the same BIOS setting and boot into SL 10.6.5, never got KP.
However, same hardware and BIOS setting, random KP when booting into SL 10.6.6
I add SMcputype=1793 (i7-950) in SMBIOS.plist last night, seems more stable now.
I test the system with 10 times reboot, never got KP again.

But, maybe the problem also relate to FakeSMC plug-in.
I change it to the newest one, FakeSMC 480.

So, please try to put SMcputype=xxxx into smbios.plist first.
Then try to use most updated FakeSMC.

thanks for the insight. sorry for the late answer by the way. i forgot to subscribe to the thread and forgot about it.

i shall try to reinstall with 10.6.5.

Re: Grey Screen Crash on Startup X58A-UD3R/i7 950

Hi, all:
After much time testing, I found that I have to select the "PCI Root ID Fix for Chameleon" in Multibeast with EasyBeast and Customization> PCI Root ID Fix for Chameleon.

when I choose "PCI Root ID Fix for Chameleon" installation, reboot, and I can see the Apple with loading animation......but just loading.........nothing happen ><.......

and I found I have to use iBoot for booting first and then choose my hard disk and it will boot my 10.6.6 successful!!!

then I can install anything, CS5, FCP, CD4.......all the software I have to use! beside have to boot with iBoot!!!

anyone has idea for this kind of situation?

ask for help pls.!!!!!

thanks!

i am back to 10.6.4 and it's the same thing...

Re: Crash Startup X58A-UD3R/i7 950 (not during install)

Disabling USB3 controller in the bios seems to have fixed the problem!!!

SWEET!
