My current Hack is a Gigabyte P31m build with a Celeron Wolfdale 2.4ghz. It works really well but I would like a bit more processing power for video conversions.
Can I just swap out the CPU or will the kernel panic? What would be the CPU replacement procedure?

Thanks in advance.

You would have to check and see if your chipset would support the processor. I would think that the OS would just read it fine.

Sounds right to me, As long as the processor itself is supported OOB you should have no problems.

OK. I found a Q9300 for a good deal on anandtech. So, the vanilla kernel supports both core2 duo and core2 quad then? Thanks in advance.

Should be no problem, just update mobo's bios to last version (to be sure Quad is supported)
