Clone the clone or repeat the upgrade

Odd question, but I cloned my 10.11 SSD system to a junk drive and upgraded it to 10.12 as a test. After a variety of steps got everything working and now was about to boot back to 10.11 and make a second safety clone of it then do the upgrade on the drive but it occurred to me that I could just clone the tweaked 10.12 back to my 10.11 disk. Stupid or smart?

If everything is working, i just clone the clone to SSD base. I do the same thing here:
1- Clone A drive to B
2 - Upgrade
3 - Clone drive B to A
