Hi guys,

I have an issue with my Lite-On DVD-RW drive. The drive seems to be "probed" every few minutes and will make a sound like the drive just closed and starts a motor spin up for a second.

This doesn't happen under Windows 7, only on my Multibeast 10.6 or 10.7 OSX installation.

Any ideas what's "probing" my drive? This will happen on a fresh boot with no applications running.

I have the same issue on my PowerMac G5, using original super drive (which is also Lite-On, I believe) and OSX 10.5.8. I think it's related to Lite-On firmware and it's relation to OSX. Except it's annoying, works just fine. I got used to it :)

If you leave a DVD/CD in the drive does it still probe?

Probing sound is happening only when drive is empty.

Usually we recommend the Sony Drive but I haven't heard issues with people who still went instead with Liteon. I would suggest leaving a blank CD/DVD inside if the noise is a major issue for you.

Putting a DVD-R into the drive has stopped it from "probing". Thanks for the idea!
