Occasionally when waking my Mac from sleep the mac will wake up but the screen won't wake up and after about 5 seconds goes into sleep mode. The monitor seems to think there's no signal incoming so will go to sleep.

The mac has definitely come on (normally woken by a wired mouse) as you can hear all the fans wake. The only way to get the screen to come on again is by turning the machine off and on again.

The issue doesn't occur on every sleep/wake cycle however I think I've noticed it more when a USB hard drive iPod is plugged in. Or every couple of sleep/wake cycles.

I've not found a definitinive cause of the issue so some trial and error is still needed but if anyone knows of this error or a log file to watch I'd really appreciate the help.

if using hd4000 fix is to disable render standby/deep renderstandby tested on asrock/gygabyte

Thanks for the suggestion stehor.

I'm using a descrere GPU MSI Nvidia GEF660Txi so I don't think the suggested fix for the integrated HD4000 graphic will work?

So I've still not been able to find a solution to this issue yet. I've read quite a few different posts on tonymac forums but nothing completely conclusive or exactly the same problem.

One recurrent solution proposed it to change the system definition to an iMac though I'm a little apprehensive to do this in case it breaks my mac and I'm unable to boot it. Am I being overly paranoid?

So I've explored system.log in Console.app and it seems that there may be a USB error causing the machine to wake/break.

Code:

If anyone can help I can post a more indepth system.log file?

Also in case it helps anyone else I found this interesting article on programs that might be causing sleep issues and how to troubleshoot them... http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57503027-263/troubleshooting-sleep-in-os-x/

Basically running the following command in a terminal window will show you what programs maybe causing sleep issues.

Code:
