Thanks to all for help. The nuclear option seems to have worked along with using Clover Configurator to clone the EFI. I am booted now from the clone via SATA.

Have you tried with just a USB stick to boot the current system, ie not the clone?

By that I mean loading just Clover onto a blank USB stick and then copying your EFI contents to it. Then restart and boot from that.
