Hi everyone,

I'm planning on building a budget Final Cut Pro X machine. The plan is to edit HD Prores on this machine, and some 4K in the future.
Right now I'm editing on a 2017 13" MacBook Pro with integrated GPU, dual core i5 and 8GB of ram. Not fast enough.

I've picked a parts list and was wondering what people think of it?
I'm aiming for budget with upgrade possibilities, and easy compatibility.

  • CPU: i3-8350K (budget quadcore)
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370M DS3H (MATX)
  • GPU: Used RX580 4GB or 8GB (does the brand matter?)
  • Ram:Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2400C16 (2x8GB)
With a case, PSU and cooler I'm at about 600 euro's for this build, which I think is very reasonable.
Wifi is not a prerequisite, Bluetooth neither. Might add a OSXwifi card in the future when I feel it's worth it.

Anyone has any pointers for this FCPx build? And should I enable iGPU, heard some conflicting stories.

For the GPU, try avoiding the XFX ones as they sometimes have problems. Try getting an MSI or Sapphire one.
I went for the Gigabyte AORUS Radeon RX 580. As mentioned in the buying guide.

I was wondering if anyone has advice on the right System definition for this build?

You could use the system definition of an iMac 19,1 or 19,2
