There is this James Bond Blu-ray pack just out and that is making me drooling ... and my wish now is to add a blu-ray player to my hack. So what are the models that you would recommend and which require the LEAST hassle ( I mean OOB, no fiddling around with injections, modifying kexts etc...) . I have read a few threads on this forum , there is the Pioneer BDR-207DBKS that is mentioned once or twice. Any other feedback about this or any other recommended player ?
And what software do you use? I have read that since Apple is not backing blu ray media (cos this doesn't make it earn any cent...) , there is no native reader in OSX. I would like a reader that can display the menus etc.. I have read about MACGO's player. It is not free though.

Help anyone?

I own mac bluray player and it works very well, they update regularly and it plays mkvs too, Cant comment on aurora as I've never used it. Right now they are the same price at $39.95. I have never seen a viable free software player for mac that was worth a crap. Kplayer is awesome for mkvs and it only costs $2.99...but currently wont do blurays.

As for a drive, I own an optiarc and a lg and they both do fine. The only mfgr I've ever had problem with in a hack was a samsung DVD burner.

Thanks. I am also tempted by the mac blu ray player. It has got one or 2 good reviews. The initial versions left much to be desired but seems to have improved a lot since then. It is currently discounted at $39.95 until the 4th November. I shall be downloading the trial version to test on the only Blu ray I own currently , Cars :)

I just had a look at the websites of both products and they seem to be pretty the same thing. Not only the whole design and layout of website and player gui,
they have exact the same preferences (even the design is the same) and if you could have a look at some of the tutorials (i.e. 5.1 sound) it look veeery simelar.

Maybe they are pretty the same ?

So finally I have bought a LG LG BH10LS38.AUAU10B blu-ray. I have not yet downloaded the Macbluray player, hope to be able to test it soon. For the time being I have been using VLC and have had mixed success, it seems that some (newer) blu-rays cannot be decoded. I could watch another one which had been out since a couple of years without any problem though.

I'm able to play blurays using WinDVD 11 inside a Windows 7 virtual machine with AnyDVD installed. I use Parallels Desktop for my virtual machine. It does not work with a Windows 8 virtual machine nor does it work with VMWare Fusion, regardless of operating system. It might seem like a lot of work but this lets me view blurays with all the native menus and extras that these "sudo" mac bluray players don't support.
