Black screen with mouse cursor!

On two different machines and three drives, I get a black screen with moving cursor. I have tried everything I can think of. One Yosemite and one mavericks. both z97-UD5H GT760 & Z78 UD5H GT660 boards with i7's. Any help at all would be appreciated. Seems to have happened all of a sudden machines have been working fine for months.

Hiya, had exactly the same issue as you. Worked fine for months then all of a sudden I just got a black screen with the cursor. My suspicion was Yosemite had installed an update in the background without me knowing. The only way I got around it was to reinstall the whole thing. Managed to get my files out using windows and installing paragon to view the files.
