I just noticed ASIX recently (2016-01-28) released a new OS X driver for their AX88179 -- USB3.0 to 10/100/1000M Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Though the installer reported a problem updating the new driver it works fine and it seems to have done the job (I'm still running OS X 10.10.5):
$ kextstat|grep asix
$ 71 0 0xffffff7f8168e000 0x9000 0x9000 com.asix.driver.ax88179-178a (1.6.0) <44 39 7 5 4 3 1>
It upgrades to version 1.6.0 as you can see above.
Link to the product page is:

The download link for the new driver is:
http://www.asix.com.tw/FrootAttach/...to_10.11_Driver_Installer_v2.6.1_20160128.zip
The USB adapter I am using has exactly the same (use System information to get your details):
Product ID: 0x1790
Vendor ID: 0x0b95 (ASIX Electronics Corporation)
As stated in the install guide included with the driver. So if yours does not match, then maybe this new driver may not work for you.
I find this USB adapter more reliable than my MB built-in Ethernet adapter, as the driver does not drop out when I push the limits of the network connection. For others it could mean choosing a more suitable MB cuz they can ignore the Ethernet chipset built onto the MB.
