Hey there, I'm putting together a new system to rum primarily MC 6 (or maybe 5.5.3 if it's more stable) and CS6 (maybe 5.5). I'm curious to hear from people with experience running MC and/or CS on an x86 machine. Is Media Composer stable? Do you trust your rig enough to let a client sit in on a session? Are you using pro i/o hardware? What are your system specs, software versions, OS release, etc?

Also, anyone using Gigabyte's newer Z77 and MC successfully?

I've been holding off upgrading my workstation for a while now, and now I have to for a freelance gig I picked up... any thoughts on putting together a reliable MC/x86 system are relevant.

Thanks,
J

Media Composer 5.5.3 on Hackintosh

I recently built a Hackintosh for editing on Media Composer. So far everything works 100% and it's much faster than the current Mac Pro I'm editing on at work. I was quite surprised how easy it actually was setting this up.
I'm using MC 5.5.3 because I don't think MC 6 is quite ready for feature film editing. I'm using Lion 10.7.4. I have an old Mojo box which works fine and am planning on getting Matrox MXO2 mini later on for HD work.
I am currently working on a film on my rig which is loaded in HD but the Mojo down-converts to SD just fine.

The rig:
Motherboard -
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
CPU -
Intel i7-2600K
GPU -
Gigabyte HD 6870 OC 1GB
RAM -
8gb Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz DDR3
SSD -
OCZ Vertex3 Max IOPS
HD -
Seagate Barracuda 1TB
Optical Drive -
Sony Optiarc
Firewire 800/400 card -
DeLock 89106
WiFi -
TP-Link TL-WDN4800
Case -
Corsair Obsidian 650D

I went ahead and took the plunge and I couldn't be more pleased w/the results.

Base Specs:
- ga-z77x-ud5h
- i7 2600k 3.4 gHz
- Nvidia GTX 560
- 16gbs Corsair Ripsaw Blue RAM
- 256gb Crucial SSD (OS X 10.7.4)
- 120gb OCZ SSD (Win 7 Pro)
- 4tb Western Digital rpm7200 64mb cahche (media storage)

I've had it crunching video in MC5.5.3 and CS 5.5 around the clock, for the last five days with no problems. I wouldn't hesitate having a producer over to sit in on a session. In fact, if this keeps up, my primary Mac Pro workstation will be going up for sale.

As it stands now, this has been the best computing decision I have ever made. I'm thrilled.

Double post.

CS6 works perfect in ML on my system, been using it for a few weeks without any problems.

Just updated to MC 6.0.3 and could not be happier. 64 bit performance really makes a difference on the 3770K and I would immediately recommend to anyone in the market to build a hackintosh for video editing.

I installed MC 6.0.3 and when I try to start the program it hangs on "Initializing Audio Plugins". Sometimes it freezes the computer and I can only move the mouse around, nothing else responds to any input. Sometimes instead of freezing an error will come up (attached). Another interesting note is that DSM Server is running at 100% CPU usage. Any help would be appreciated, the folks over on the avid forums basically won't help since this is a hackintosh.

Specs:
GA Z77X-UD5H
i5 3570k
Nvidia GTX 680
128gb vertex 3 SSD
16 gb 2133Mhz ram

for the audio plugins go in: /Library/Application Support/Digidesign

and delete or move the audio plugins, leave only the one with avid name, restart your hackintosh and all will work fine.
