I did a Combo Update from 10.8 to 10.8.3, got installation failed error at the end of the installation process but "About this Mac" shows i'm on 10.8.3, the system boots fine but native apps such as iMessage, Mail, and App Store crash upon launch. iTunes launches but it's still the one shipped with ML 10.8 so i don't think the update went through. Tried clearing the cache and it didn't help.
 
did you update using the combo update, or through software update (app store)?
 
the combo or the delta update from the apple site? there are two available from apple to download, plus the one available from the app store which is the same as the delta update.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640 thats the combo. its 200mb bigger than the delta download.

try repairing permissions and rebuilding cache also.

Yeah that's the Combo update i downloaded.. Should i give the Delta update a shot since it already says i'm on 10.8.3 maybe it'll overwrite whatever is corrupting the native apps?

Edit: Both update methods (Delta & Combo) failed, apps kept crashing.
 
I did a manual backup of all the default apps and updated, now the apps launch ok from their backup folder. Is there a way to overwrite in their original /applications folder?
Software Update utility is broken still but the app store update look-up no longer shows 10.8.3.
