Sorry for double post, but is it at all possible for this to be a BIOS issue? To me the BIOS whitelist is some voodoo magic, but logically speaking could it be hampering the speeds as this is not a card manufactured by Lenovo? The device did boot, however, without screaming some "Unsupported hardware" message.

No. Problem with antenna setup vs. card, perhaps, but BIOS is not involved.

Okay, thanks. My knowledge is quite fuzzy in that area, which is why I refrain from BIOS modding as well...

I discovered something interesting: my upload speed is normal, around 6.5 Mbps (fastest speed around here) but my download is only 0.5 Mbps. Does this mean its no longer a card issue, or could the card still be at fault??

Not really an expert on WiFi radios. Try different hardware and compare. I've purchased several AR9280 cards on ebay for under $10.

Update: it's not a hardware issue. Card works fine in Windows with speeds of up to 8 Mbps (normal/moderately fast for my area).

Any idea what else could be wrong? Should I try a fresh install?

AR9280 cards are available for ~$10 from ebay...

That would require a BIOS whitelist removal, which is something I'm too sheepish to try. Is there any way around that?

EDIT: Steeled my guts and finally removed the whitelist. I had the file laying around for months but I finally decided to do it today.

Note (for others): When AR9280 native IDs are not allowed by the whitelist, but AR9285 ids are, you can also rebrand an AR9280 to match the IDs required by the whitelist.

The Linux (recovery) guide linked within is recommended.

Since you defeated the whitelist with patched BIOS, you can use a better card such as BCM94352HMB.
