ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 working with GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5

Thanks for the help, but I will order the Asus card, as I got my Apollo Twin MK2 and I need to work with it and I can not wait until at some point Gigabyte has in stock its card, in any case if it does not work well Asus will have to wait for this in stock Gigabyte, but hey, I have hope that it works without problems, as they said in this thread both gigabyte and Asus use the same Chipset so, I'll try, Regards!

@iJ-88
I have "Gigabyte Z270X Gaming 5" which has THB-C(5pin thunderbolt Add-in Card Connector).
I suspicious about the connector size because of the above post of meeyorp12.
Then I compared the connector size using manuals(not actual boards).
And the size of the connector on gigabyte mobo is smaller than Asus mobo one.
Also someone on Amazon said the connector size problem.
Please upload the picture of the connector part or method you use iJ-88.
Thank you.

Hello, I have the Gigabyte Z270X Gaming 5 and the connector of Asus TB3 is bigger than the connector that the mother has. It does not fit.
I will try to put cable by cable taking them from the original plastic connector that comes with the Asus card in order to see whether it works. The problem is that when I was pulling the individual cables from the plastic connector I dragged two of them away from their respective copper connector. So now, I have to solder them again and try.

Unfortunately I do not have the machine anymore. I sold it and I had to bite the bullet and purchase a MBPr as I needed a portable machine for work.

My card plugged in and worked. No modifications needed to the connector/cable. The 5 pin connector does have to be plugged into the motherboard a certain way up if I remember correctly...

I have included a picture of my motherboards header below via Google (it's THB_C.. next to COM)
And a photo of the cable included with my TB card and he correct way to connect it...

Note that I was using this with a series 100 motherboard. Perhaps something has changed in the series 200 boards?

I will amend the 1st post to state that unfortunately I can no longer support this thread due to the lack of the hardware!

You may find some others in the thread that have successfully got this working who can help.

Good luck and I hope that you get it sorted :)

The Asus Thunderbolt3EX card worked well for me after making the necessary bios changes and moved it to the PCI slot closest to the TB header. The only issue is I have to boot it into Windows 10 first where the installed Intel driver configures and enables the chain, then reboot into Mac OS. Clearly there needs to be an intel driver, or configurator utility in order to get it to work solely with MacOS. If I didn't dual boot, I'd be out of luck running TB3 in MacOS. If someone has a work around, I'd love to hear it. :)

Interestingly the Clarett2Pre thunderbolt interface I used had audio drop outs consistently in Windows 10 but worked like a charm in MacOS. In all fairness, their Windows drivers were in beta.

hey im a little n00b confused here. Do these thunderbolt 2 ports also trasnfer data like form an external HD or is it only for hooking up a display? thx!

Thunderbolt includes PCIe (for any PCIe device) and DisplayPort (for displays) signals. Thunderbolt Docks, or Thunderbolt adapters, or Thunderbolt hard drives, contain a Thunderbolt chip that provides a PCIe downstream port for PCIe controller chips for different devices such as USB, SATA, Ethernet, FireWire. A USB controller chip can have connected to it a USB audio codec. A Thunderbolt expansion chassis will have one or more PCIe slots where you can connect any type of PCIe card containing controller chips such as those already mentioned, but also graphics controller chips, etc. A Thunderbolt dock with more than one PCIe device or a Thunderbolt expansion chassis with more than one PCIe slot will use a PCIe switch chip (pci-bridge) with an upstream port and multiple downstream ports.

Apple has an overview of Thunderbolt technology.
https://developer.apple.com/library...eptual/ThunderboltDevGuide/Basics/Basics.html

You should be able to see all the devices connected to a Thunderbolt port in the IORegistryExplorer.app.

Below is an example.
1) RP05 is a root port. It's like a downstream port with no upstream port. This is one of the ports of the motherboard's PCH (platform controller hub) chipset.
1.1) pci8086,1578 is the DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 Bridge [Alpine Ridge 4C 2015]. It has one upstream port connected to the root port. It has multiple downstream ports.
1.1.1) pci8086,1577 is the DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 NHI [Alpine Ridge 4C 2015].
1.1.2) pci8086,156d is the DSL5520 Thunderbolt 2 Bridge [Falcon Ridge 4C 2013]. This is in an OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock connected by a Startech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter to a downstream port of the Alpine Ridge chip. This has multiple downstream ports.
1.1.2.1) pci1b73,1100 is the FL1100 USB 3.0 Host Controller (Fresco Logic device 1100) connected to a downstream port of the Falcon Ridge chip. This has a USB audio codec device attached (below is shown only PCIe device, not USB devices).
1.1.2.2) pci8086,1533 is the I210 Gigabit Network Connection
1.1.2.3) another USB chip for the USB ports of the dock.
1.1.2.4) pci1d2d,9001 is the FW643 PCI Express 1394b Controller (PHY/Link) (FireWire)
1.1.2.5) pci8086,1578 is the DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 Bridge [Alpine Ridge 4C 2015] in an AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro. The upstream port is connected to a downstream port of the OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock's Falcon Ridge chip using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter (which supports reverse direction, unlike the Startech adapter mentioned above).
1.1.2.5.1) pci1b21,625 is the Asmedia (ASM) SATA controller chip. A hard drive is connected to that (below is shown only PCIe devices, not SATA devices).
1.1.3) pci8086,15b6 is the DSL6540 USB 3.1 Controller [Alpine Ridge] (supports USB 3.1 gen 2 speed of 10 Gb/sec). This is part of Thunderbolt 3 since it uses a USB-C connector. A Thunderbolt 2 chip does not have a USB controller.

an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter (which supports reverse direction, unlike the Startech adapter mentioned above).

Hi Joe,

What do you mean by reverse direction?

Best,

Zipb

What do you mean by reverse direction?
All Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapters (Apple, AKiTiO, Cable Matters, Delcok, Lintes, StarTech) allow connecting Thunderbolt 2 devices downstream to Thunderbolt 3 devices (or computers) that are upstream.

I believe that only the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter is bidirectional so it will also allow connecting Thunderbolt 3 devices downstream to Thunderbolt 2 devices (or computers).

In my example chain, I have Thunderbolt 3 (computer) -> Thunderbolt 2 (dock) -> Thunderbolt 3 (raid) -> Thunderbolt 3 (display; not shown in my previous post since it is not a PCIe device)

Normally, you would put the higher speed Thunderbolt 3 devices upstream of the lower speed Thunderbolt 2 devices. However, I have a Startech Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter that does not have a second Thunderbolt 3 port, so it has to go at the end of the chain and it has to go after the raid, since that is the only Thunderbolt 3 device that I have with two Thunderbolt 3 connectors (and I don't have a third Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter).
