Note: This guide is for anyone who has a PC Desktop and would like to have a clean install of OS X Snow Leopard and subsequently Mountain Lion on a PC.
Special thanks to Tonymac and to Betelgeuse on his tutorial
http://tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=20191
it helped me do my install and would like to share my experience too!
SL 10.6.X Retail:
1) Buy SL DVD from apple store for $29.99 ***Update 12/6/2012: Well now is $19.99***
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
2) Download and Burn on CD or DVD iBoot Legacy (from your Windows PC)
http://www.tonymacx86.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=3
BIOS setup:
In order to have a successful install of SL you need to configure your BIOS. Out of the Box (OOTB) my hardware Asus P8Z68-V PRO, i7 2600K, Diamond HD 5870 set up was:
1) None, yes may I repeat...NONE!!!
2) Next? Jump to Pre Install SL section otherwise read below...
If OOTB BIOS does not work for you when installing Snow Leopard the do the following:
1) Turn on your PC
2) Press and hold [DELETE] on your keyboard until it takes you to EZ BIOS mode. Jump to Advance Mode by clicking Exit/Advance (top right).
3) For i5 2500K users Disable Speedstep turbo in the BIOS. OOTB is Enabled. For some reason members with i5 2500K had to Disable. Not for me with i7 2600K and tested this install multiple times. To find it navigate to Ai Tweaker\ CPU Power Management\Enhanced Intel Speedstep Tecknology and Disable. For i7 2600K either Disable or Enable it will work.
4) Now navigate to Advance\SATA Configuration and on SATA Mode ALWAYS on AHCI Mode. May I repeat? ALWAYS on AHCI Mode!!!!. OOTB it was on AHCI Mode, on the safe side make sure it's selected.
Pre Install SL:
1) For now leave 1 RAM on one slot otherwise your install will fail. I tried with two RAMS and install failed. My RAM is a Corsair Vengeance 4GB and after I had Snow Leopard/Lion up and running I was able to add my second RAM (total 8 GB of RAM).
2) Turn ON your PC - Press and Hold [DELETE] on your Keyboard. Inside the BIOS leave settings "as is" (read paragraph above for special BIOS instructions!).
3) Insert your iBoot Legacy and make your Disk Drive your Priority Boot drive. To do this under BIOS EZ mode at the bottom section click and hold your Disk Drive and move it to the beginning of your Drive's lineup. Save BIOS changes [F10]. This will cause to boot from CD/DVD.
4) Once iBoot Legacy boots (you'll see tonymac's logo at the top) pop out iBoot Legacy and insert Snow Leopard DVD
5) Press [F5] with Snow Leopard inside and you'll notice the CD Logo description change to MAC OS X Install DVD immediately type GraphicsEnabler=No and then press [ENTER]. For my set up with graphic card ATi 5870 it would not boot if I didn't type GE=No. If you can't boot with my instructions then for all other graphic cards read tonymac's special intructions of iBoot, he quotes on item #8:
"[Edited] NOTE: If you cannot get to the installation screen, [edited], type PCIRootUID=1 before hitting enter. If that doesn't work then try PCIRootUID=1 -x or just -x which will enter Mac OS X Safe Mode and will allow you to proceed. For some graphics cards, use GraphicsEnabler=No boot flag to proceed."
To read more on tonymac's instructions go to
http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/iboot-multibeast-install-mac-os-x-on.html otherwise move on to step 6.
6) After typing what you need (step 5) to boot up SL and then Pressing [ENTER] you should see the Apple Logo with an infinite circle at the bottom! Wait for 10 mins or less. if you get a Kernel Panic (KP) or crash for the lack of a better term then re-do step 3.
7) Once Snow Leopard installation screen open let the games begin....click next then on the top Menu Bar click on UTILITIES then DISK UTILITY to format your Hard Drive (HD).
8) Select your HD on the left column, and on the right column click ERASE. NAME your drive Snow Leopard and make sure Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
9) Click Erase (bottom right) & confirm Erase (this will make your HD SL ready!)
10) Close Disk Utility/Install Mac OS X/Click Continue/Accept Terms/Select SL HD/Customize (bottom left) and deselect Printers-Language Translation-X11 (it will save 40% of time when installing and you can install those later. Otherwise install everything. Click OK and Installation begins...
11) It will take 20+ mins depending on your hardware. Move the mouse occasionally so PC won't blackout or freeze on you.
12) After installation is done REBOOT and press and hold [DELETE] to take you to BIOS. Pop out SL DVD and insert iBoot Legacy and boot from CD/DVD.
13) When you boot on iBoot Legacy select SL and type GraphicsEnabler=No (or anything that worked for you on step 5 to boot up SL)
14) Press [Enter]
15) ....OMG you are in SL 10.6.3 Retail!!! Note: only Internet worked for me...hmm interesting...normally internet, sound, USB 3.0 and bluetooth does not work and it needs to be patched.
***Update*** 12/6/2012*** 16) I've found a USB dongle that I've been using for a year. It's less than $2.00 and shipping is free. This is a great solution to use for your Magic Trackpad and wireless keyboard. http://www.ebay.ch/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320306739684#ht_3831wt_1037
UpdateHelper-ComboUpdate 10.6.8-Multibeast
1) Download Multibeast SL Edition (link below)
http://www.tonymacx86.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=3
2) Within Multibeast Install: EasyBeast & hNak's Apple Intel E1000 (install both kexts because you'll need it for combo update 10.6.8)
2a) I did not test sound but I've read multiple times to install Audio Install ALC8XX HDA and Apple HDA Rollback. I have a Bose Companion 5 connected to USB 2.0. BTW USB 3.0 does not work. I have not tested this yet but you may want to download Asmedia 3.0 http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68V_PRO/#download let me know if it works for you. I found this link and for some it worked but for this mobo Asus P8Z68-V PRO it worked but made other things not work. I think he/she installed the wrong driver, but read here http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?t=22339&p=262756
3) After Multibeast install on SL desktop find Spotlight (top right magnifier glass logo) and type Extra (folder). Find org.chameleon.Boot.plist double click to open and find where it says GraphicsEnabler, just below it says "Yes", change that to "No" (without the quotes). Disregard this step if GE=Yes works for you otherwise you will no longer have to type GE=No when booting!!!
4) Download and install UpdateHelper from
http://www.tonymacx86.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=3
5) REBOOT!!! With iBoot Legacy CD/DVD inside.
6) Now on SL desktop Download and install ComboUpdate 10.6.8
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399
7) REBOOT!!! Press DELETE for BIOS and change to boot on SL HD.
8) SL graphics looks crisp and look you have the Apps Store icon!!!

***Update 12/6/2012*** We are now in Mountain Lion and Unibeast is the way to install Mountain Lion in your custom PC
http://www.tonymacx86.com/61-unibeast-install-os-x-mountain-lion-any-supported-intel-based-pc.html
Post Install
After you boot up your new Mountain Lion my advise is to leave your configurations as is, now try to reboot if you boot up then you are fine, if not then follow the steps below:
Put rBoot in a CD/DVD and boot from CD/DVDto boot, download from here http://www.tonymacx86.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=3. If booting fails again then befor booting type GraphicsEnabler=No
To troubleshoot once you are in your Desktop open Multibeast and Install:
1) EasyBeast Installation
2) hnak's AppleIntelE1000e Ethernet (if internet does not work)
3) Search the "Extra" Folder through Spotlight and open "org.chameleon.Boot.plist" and change GraphicsEnabler from "Yes" to "No"
It should look something like this:
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>No</string>
4) If you want to change to GraphicEnabler=Yes you must test an alternate framebuffer. On my card what worked was AtiConfig=Uakari. Read this excellent article written by tonymac himself http://legacy.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?t=46392
You are done baby GOOD LUCK!!!
