I am on Catalina and accidentally deleted my AppleHDA.kext. However, audio (external USB sound device) still seems to be working. I cannot put it back because I don't have the file and copying something to S/L/E doesn't seem to be easy these days. Help!

re run the macOS installer to refresh your kexts

Problem is that this is just an upgrade from Mojave. So I have no installer from Catalina.

Ok, thank you. Out of curiosity - it seems like AppleHDA is responsible for audio playback. How come it still works. Because I use external USB audio? Do I even need the kext then?

must be because you are using USB Audio, also using VoodooHDA is a replacement if you had happened to install that?

Nope, I didn't.
So maybe I can wait until I install the 10.15.4 update? Will that recreate the missing kext?

yes, that will work

also no need to fix something that isn't quite broken

if all works ok now then probably best to leave as is for the time being

i am sure the next update will be out soon
