Buying and renting are completely different when it comes to iTunes. If you rent you must watch on apple device or in iTunes, and you have a time limit as well.

Unfortunately it doesn't recognize many displays to play the 1080 version (no clue if it even could detect any on the hackintosh) but you can use the 1080 version on iPhone or apple tv. I was pretty upset when I read that the first time but now I just make sure to only by SD quality. They're cheaper and I can hardly notice a difference.
