Oh dear, now the 2018-003 security update to 10.13.6 is causing Mojave like failure.

Seeing the 'IOPlatformPanicAction -> AppleAHCIDiskDriver' message I tried unplugging my RAID card, but that had no impact. I also tried swapping the graphics card between the two PCIe2x16 slots (now plugged into the blue one), but it makes no difference.

I've just posted HERE as that thread mentions the failing address
0xc0500198 in the context of Radeon GPUs. I'll report any conclusion back here should anything be forthcoming.

I never managed to get any further with the RX560, so I just bought a Sapphire Pulse RX580 8GB thinking "Well, this is known to work, surely". Oh dear... attempting to boot Mojave or the 10.13.6 2019-001 security update fails in the same way as before...

I've tried tried your suggestion, with the Sensor kexts removed and the additional boot arg. Booting the 14.2.2 bootloader from USB, which is probably more reproducible than my High Sierra installation, I got the attached failure.

I know that people have got the RX580 working and likewise the W3690 Xeon, so I'm wondering if this is just a bad BIOS issue. I've tried npci bootargs before to force re-enumeration of the PCI bus to no avail.

A breakthrough! I figured that the issue may be that the AMD driver doesn't expect to be the sole driver and so if I had another primary display used by the BIOS, things might work better. I installed an old Nvidia Quadro 2000 card which MacOS will only use as a dumb frame buffer with no acceleration. I configured the BIOS to use this instead of the RX580 to boot, and voila, the High Sierra 2019-001 security patch installed without issue.

Both RX580 displays work perfectly. The only problem is that I now have a third, unwanted display. How can I disable the Nvidia driver? Based on the following:

I added NVDAResman and NVDAGF100Hal to the DisableDrivers section in config.plist. Didn't have any effect unfortunately.

How can I disable the Quadro 2000 display?

I moved the IONDRVSupport.kext and all the NVDA*.kext drivers out of /System/Library/Extensions and that had the desired effect, but that seems rather clumsy and might not survive an OS upgrade.

I tried an update to Mojave, but it crashed on reboot. I was able to boot to the recovery image, and move the kexts as per the previous post... all seems to be working now! :)
