Everything works great

4330s i3 4GB RAM

But I notice everything on USB freezes intermittently for a second then comes back

So webcam image freezes, light goes out - comes back

SD Card comes and goes

iPad plugged into USB comes and goes

MIDI keyboard has stuck notes which come and go

It is as if the laptop is scanning for something and finding and losing it?

Any ideas?

It doesn't do this with Windows

Possibly to do with BLUETOOTH which says it is enabled and seems to switch on and off in the System Prefs but I cannot click to switch it off

I have Clover Configurator on here so I can go in and flag relevant things

Or if there is something I can type in TERMINAL to switch Bluetooth off?

How do I remove BLUETOOTH from the equation completely?

Thanks

Fm

Sounds like you neglected to install a firmware uploader for your bluetooth.

I don't really need Bluetooth on this machine and all hubs are marked USB 2.0

The only instruction I saw in the installation writeup was

"4x30s laptops can have problems with USB 3.0 if Atheros Bluetooth is turned on. You have to turn off the Bluetooth on the card by tapping."

???

Tapping???

I can switch it off in BIOS???

But I do not know what you mean by Tapping???

If you have AR3011 BT, install IOath3kfrmwr.kext: https://github.com/RehabMan/OS-X-Atheros-3k-Firmware

There is no issue with the proper firmware uploader kext.

The same kext is also available in the ProBook Installer.

If you wish to disable the built-in BT device, you use tape (taping, not tapping)... to cover the pins that correspond to the USB on the half-mini PCIe. But it is not necessary with IOath3kfrmwr.kext installed.

Thanks for clearing that up I thought it might be like tapping the trackpad to switch it off and have spent the past hour or so reading through all the manuals for the 4330s on the HP website

It is HP-branded Atheros AR5B195 which I am stuck with because BIOS won't accept anything else

I installed Atheros Kext in latest PBI

Turn Bluetooth Off is greyed out in System Preference

I don't actually need Bluetooth so is there any way I can get at that button?

Or anything I can type into TERMINAL to switch it off?

Thanks

I am thinking this?

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth ControllerPowerState -int 1

sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.blued.plist
sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.blued.plist

AR3011 bluetooth drivers in Yosemite do not allow you to control the device power.
