My original motherboard latch release tray gets worse every time I open the case of this machine, so I decided to 3D print a replacement alternative. I did the reverse spring mod so that I would not need the latching functionality from the old tray. I know I don't need something between the motherboard and sheet metal anymore, but I feel better about having something there. Having any art is pointless, since it will be hidden by the motherboard, but it was fun to add a design, because I'm new to printing. It's 3mm thick, the art is 1.5mm deep, it's 2 pieces and is held in place by the same 4 screws that held the old tray down. It was very difficult getting those in the right spots but digital calipers go a long way. The motherboard standoffs still screw to the sheet metal.

Here are the points I hooked the spring (the first one was very difficult to get, had to use a pick to grab and help pull it through:

Well I went back and made some revisions, I did some more precise fitment/measurement work for the mounting holes and side plastic panel access hole. I got rid of the text, and increased the Apple logo size, and printed it in all black for a stealthier look. Here's a cool photo of the printing process, as well as the plates mounted to the sheet metal, and the computer back together at the end with the front panel vents that I designed as well.

Speaking of the printing process, I actually like the look of the structural waffle pattern of the inside of the print, I kinda wish I could figure out how to print the top of the pieces like that, but I've already wasted enough plastic filament getting to this point where I am satisfied, so I'm calling it a day. Overall I am very happy with how this came out.
